She crept up behind the wall of a house and waited, her breath exploding in front of her. She could backtrack, wait for the others to pass her along the highway then jog to the north, keeping to the shadows. For all she knew, though, they'd split up, each one poised with a knife, blocking all the ways back to her truck. What if there were more? Another waitress? An unknown accomplice on the street? All of them would be waiting for her to make that one last mistake.
