Review - 314 by A.R. Wise

Alma Harper has been trying to forget what happened in Widowsfield 16 years ago. She has a good life as a music teacher now, and might rekindle her relationship with her one true love. However, the number 314 haunts her, and threatens to bring her back to the day that her brother disappeared. When a reporter shows up, just days before March 14th, Alma realizes that her past is coming back to haunt her. What happened on March 14th, at 3:14, 16 years ago? No one but The Skeleton Man can remember.

Review - I liked this story. It caught my interest. I am not very invested in the characters but the story line has me. At times it feels like a cross between a Scooby Doo mystey and Blair Witch. There were intense moments of monologue that got me to giggle. The very end, it felt to me like a game show decision that must be made by the contestant. It didn't feel life threatening, it was comical.

May be it's my own sensibility not trust a demonic enity as far as I can throw them, but, dumb characters do. Why in the world would anyone believe what a demon told them anyway. There is no demonic honor system.

Despite these problems, I genuinely liked the story. Will I continue with the series? No. The first one was enough. I enjoyed it and time to move on.

Bad Juju by Dina Rae @HalooftheDamned

Bad Juju

A Haitian bokor mentors two teens in the dark arts. Their spells backfire.

Lucien Nazaire flees his Haitian homeland and meanders around the United States for decades. He settles in a Wisconsin trailer park filled with elderly tenants. He meets Jake and hires him for odd household jobs. As their relationship progresses, Lucien invites the boy into the world of Voodoo.
Jake LaRue lives in foster care with his abusive uncle. The Voodoo lessons give him a sense of power within an otherwise helpless situation. Despite his loner status, he instantly connects with Henry, his only friend in high school.
Henry Novak has Asperger’s Syndrome. He fixates on historical events, most recently the 2010 Haitian earthquake. Like Jake, he becomes passionate about the dark side of Voodoo. They learn how to cast spells on those they hate and lust, leading up to dire consequences.
Months after the Haitian earthquake, Henry convinces his family to volunteer for the island's reconstruction. Their mission turns into a nightmare when he mysteriously walks off of the campsite.
Bad Juju is a balance of horror, romance, and literary fiction intended for adults and mature teens. The plot uses research involving the Voodoo religion.

The Last Degree by Dina Rae @HalooftheDamned

The Last Degree

The Last Degree is a fictionalized account of how Freemasons and other secret societies set up the world for takeover. Ancient writings foretell a ‘Shining One’ who emerges as the world’s prophet. A murder of a Most Worshipful mason resembles a secret oath. A cop gets too close to solving the crime. Paranoid preppers go underground, preparing for war.
Headlines such as the Norway massacre, meltdown of the European Union, unscrupulous media, animal die-offs, Middle Eastern unrest, and U.S. shrinking power make the plot relevant to present day. This book is an ode to Christians, Birthers, 2012ers, Truthers, preppers, and/or other conspiracy junkies who enjoy Dan Brown, Jesse Ventura, Brad Meltzer, Alex Jones, Jerry Jenkins and Tim LaHaye.

The Scourge by OJ Connell

The Scourge (The Case Files of Edgar Sullivan #4)

The veil that divides the worlds of the living and the dead - a fixture which has largely shielded mankind from the supernatural throughout history - has been known occasionally to diminish. Due to such fluctuations, human beings are sometimes accosted by phantoms and other curious sorts from the shadows... The line separating the natural from the supernatural is becoming blurred in the fourth installment of the Edgar Sullivan paranormal mystery series! When Edgar Sullivan finds one of his clients dead and covered in strange, black cockroaches, he decides to consult a local exterminator. Rudolph, the exterminator, fills him in on something: These roaches have been seen elsewhere-- and they've killed before. Eager to avoid more deaths, Sullivan collaborates with the exterminator and tracks down the plague of roaches as they prepare to swarm their next victim. Can Sullivan overcome his fear and put a stop to the scourge of insects, or will he be forced to let nature run its course? And, is it truly mother nature who's driving the insects to kill, or is it the work of something more sinister?

Valley of the Scarecrow by Gord Rollo @gordrollo

Valley of the Scarecrow

During the great depression, a small backwoods community in Iowa face even more difficult times than most, having to endure the slowly fading sanity of their leader, Reverend Joshua Miller. When it is clear the man has slipped beyond the edge of reason and perhaps signed a deal with the devil, the citizens unite to stop him any way they can, breaking into the church to lash the reverend to his wooden alter cross then boarding up the windows and doors to leave him to fate and God's judgment. The people of Oak Valley then abandoned their town to the cornfields and woods; ending the madness for what they hoped was forever.

They were wrong!

Seventy-four years later, the corn and trees have taken back the area and not much is left of the once thriving little community but Joshua Miller's desecrated church still stands, and within its boarded up and sun-baked walls something that used to be a holy man waits for whoever is unfortunate enough to release him from his cross...
