The mob is out for blood—literally.

At the height of prohibition, the real threat on the streets of 1929 Chicago isn’t Al Capone and his empire built on bootleg whiskey; it’s the vampire mafia. And the liquid they trade is of an altogether deadlier variety.

In this hidden world, the vampire mafia is bootlegging an addictive and deadly synthetic blood called Thrill. When the vampire Maurice discovers their blood-running operation, he must act to stop the flow of bootlegged blood, or risk the power balance of the vampire world tipping entirely into the hands of those who have been corrupted.

But the mafia doesn’t take kindly to interlopers, even those with fangs.

The Vampire Maurice is a brand-new, full-length novel set in the world of Johnny B. Truant’s bestselling Fat Vampire series.

One man, Jack the Ripper, haunted the dark streets of Whitechapel in the year 1888. One may not wish to call him a man, for at the end of the day, he never was, not entirely. The Ripper was and always has been more of a specter than a man, but who is he? The stories you’ve been told couldn’t be further from the truth—a barber, a doctor, and even a prince?

Ahead is a look into the real Ripper’s story from his eyes and those among him. The riveting story of Jack and his most beloved friend, John, along with those they saved, and those they damned at the request of the goddess, Fate, finally comes to light. This is a story of loss, demons, witches, and the tormenting of one man by the puppeteering hands of one very stingy individual named old Nick.

Review: Among the Living by Timothy W. Long @TimWLong

The dead walk. Now the real battle for Seattle has begun.

When a gas leak causes the National Guard to forcibly evacuate the neighborhood, Lester isn't going anywhere. The former dope pusher has a new clientele… the kind that require him to deal lead instead of drugs.

Mike, a newspaper reporter, suspects a conspiracy lies behind the chaos. He’s driven to find the truth, even if it means dragging his beautiful co-worker into danger.

Kate has a dark secret: she’s a budding young serial killer. As society collapses, her skill in dealing death may be the one thing that can keep her alive.

These survivors, along with others, are drawn together in their quest to find not only the truth behind the spreading apocalypse, but also to escape the madness they face at every turn.

Review: The book does a great job of introducing all the characters and and the slow burn of their catastrophic situation. You get to know each one and learn what makes them tick and of course, some are are going to die. This is a zombie story.

There is one negative and that is the author's use of bathos. Every character has some joke to tell at the worst time and most of the time aren't funny. I could do with out it.

It's otherwise a seriously strong, well told, zombie story. I greatly enjoyed it overall.

Review - After the Cure by Deirdre Gould @scullerytales

Eight years ago the December Plague swept through the human population of earth. The Infected were driven mad by the disease, becoming violent and cannibalistic, killing even those closest to them without hesitation. Six years ago, the tiny surviving community of Immune humans found a cure, and the Infected began to wake up and realize what they'd done. And what had been done to them. Over time, society began to rebuild itself. Now it is ready to judge those responsible for the Plague. Nella Rider, the court psychologist and Frank Courtlen a defense attorney are trying to establish the truth. But more depends on it than they know. They race to find the answers they need before the fragile remains of humanity vanish for good.

Review - I've read a lot of zombie novels and I can say this one is really different for a zombie story. It's more like a mystery adventure and that's can make it even more exciting if every moan you hear could be your last.

There is a romance thrown into the mix and for not going into graphic detail, the reader definitely know what time it is. It's sexy time. Gould uses excellent literary skills to bring the reader intimately close to the action yet in the end, give the characters privacy and preserve their modestly. It was hot talk but in an intelligent way.

The zombie stuff is the same old, same old but the twist regarding the cured having to deal with what they had done is solid horror. The mystery is truly a mystery and having a rush to complete the puzzle in time, gets my heart pumping. This is only book one but ends well enough for me not having to continue on in the series.

Check it out.

Review - Dark Ride by P.G. Kassel @PGKassel

Some criminals have all the luck, but Marty’s is about to run out…
Marty Wedlow needs one last score before he can skip town. It’s only a matter of time before two thugs he swindled point a finger… and their guns in his direction. But even when Marty is brought to the police station for his latest crime, he’s not worried. Marty is incredibly lucky.

After dodging the long arm of the law yet again, Marty looks for another illicit payday at a local amusement park. What he finds instead is a mysterious stranger who prophesies that his lucky days are running out. He ignores the warnings as he pursues a vicious conquest. But good fortune is a wheel, and Marty is about to find out what happens when it spins in the other direction.

Dark Ride is a supernatural thriller in the vein of The Twilight Zone. If you like eerie amusement parks, pulse-pounding page-turners, and a touch of the paranormal, then you’ll love P.G. Kassel’s electrifying story.

Review - A short novella that could easily have been fleshed out more. The police character were one dimensional and not very bright. They've been after Marty Wedlow for a while but he always outsmarted them.

What was interesting, to be introduced to Marty as some kind of anti-hero and slowly revealed to be a real scum bag. The police are definitely incapable of bringing him to justice but Marty finally meets justice in a horrific manner. My favorite line from the book is this, "He ignored God and God's ways his entire life, and now it was not God reaching for him but Satan." It sums up Marty in one sentence.

It's a quick fun read with not a lot of meat on it's bone but yet still a tasty literary snack.

Review - Lisey's Story by Stephen King

Lisey Debusher Landon lost her husband Scott two years ago, after a twenty-five year marriage of the most profound and sometimes frightening intimacy. Scott was an award-winning, bestselling novelist and a very complicated man. Early in their relationship, before they married, Lisey had to learn from him about books and blood and bools. Later, she understood that there was a place Scott went -- a place that both terrified and healed him, could eat him alive or give him the ideas he needed in order to live. Now it's Lisey's turn to face Scott's demons, Lisey's turn to go to Boo'ya Moon. What begins as a widow's effort to sort through the papers of her celebrated husband becomes a nearly fatal journey into the darkness he inhabited. Perhaps King's most personal and powerful story ever, Lisey's Story is about the wellsprings of creativity, the temptations of madness, and the secret language of love.

Bool? A new word introduced by Stephen King into my vocabulary. Read this story and you will learn it about it and eventually understand it. It is the thread that binds everything together. What I can tell you after finishing this is that it's a wonderful story. The first third is a drag. Introductions and definitions really of all the words and ideas you will follow for the rest of this book.

The story flashbacks a lot but it is essential to the story as every reveal from the past is relevant for the present. It is done well and draws you into the bizarre world of Scott and Lisey. The villain is a real terror and the reader presented the character is a way I could only imagine Matthew McConaughey playing the character in my mind. Mare Winningham read this book so well. It was a pleasure to hear her.

Get this book, it is awesome! A short interview with Stephen King follows the story. He gives insight to where this story came from.

BOOL! The end.

H. P. Lovecraft: The Collection by H.P. Lovecraft

Howard Phillips Lovecraft was an American author who achieved posthumous fame through his influential works of horror fiction. Virtually unknown and only published in pulp magazines before he died in poverty, he is now regarded as one of the most significant 20th-century authors in his genre. Lovecraft was born in Providence, Rhode Island, where he spent most of his life. Among his most celebrated tales is "The Call of Cthulhu", canonical to the Cthulhu Mythos. Never able to support himself from earnings as author and editor, Lovecraft saw commercial success increasingly elude him in this latter period, partly because he lacked the confidence and drive to promote himself. He subsisted in progressively straitened circumstances in his last years; an inheritance was completely spent by the time he died at the age of 46.

In a single moment, everything changes. Hundreds of thousands of people suddenly collapse, leaving their friends and loved ones behind, terrified and confused.

Moments later, the fallen rise and the survivors become the hunted.

Follow three intertwining stories through the apocalypse.

Will Kessler works a dead-end warehouse job in Tennessee, driving a forklift and unloading shipping containers.
