Review - Judas by Roy Bright @Brightylad

After 2000 years walking the earth, Judas Iscariot, has seen it all, and more horror than he would care to. His punishment by God, for the betrayal of his son Jesus Christ, has him walk the earth for eternity, a broken man, unable to die. Yet, despite immortality, he has been bound by rules; never allowed to find love, raise a family, or make use of any wealth he might acquire. Throughout his sentence, God has given him tasks, ones he could not refuse, where his incredible skill with a sword is put to use against wayward demons, and the forces of evil. And at the end of 2012, a messenger appears, presenting him with his greatest and most important mission: For three days, he must protect six-year-old Charlotte Hope, as she approaches her seventh birthday. She is 'The Light', whose purpose is to shepherd humankind away from its hedonistic, violent and unruly ways. However, the forces of Hell also wish to acquire the child for their master, Lucifer, so that he may drain her light and become unchallenged in his crusade to dominate the kingdom of man. With the aid of the unlikely pairing of police detective Gary Cross and prostitute Abi Colter, can Judas protect Charlotte so that she may save all humankind and in turn, release him from the curse, thus allowing his entry into the White Kingdom, or will Lucifer succeed and bring forth the Apocalypse?

Review -  This book was a joy to read. Fast action and a well paced story. Judas is a great anti-hero if there ever was one and I look forward to the next book. Charlotte's character grows stronger with every new obstacle as she become aware of more and more what power she possesses.
The story of redemption and sacrifice is peppered through out this book. Some times it gets hard to swallow but that's life.
This hero's tale is well down and extremely enjoyable. The theology gets off track in some places but it fits the narrative that Judas is kept immortal for 2000 years. That fact would change the nature of God. So don't bring this book to the seminary just to the couch or lounge chair, read it and enjoy.

Review of Slimy Underbelly (Dan Shamble Zombie P. I.) by Kevin J. Anderson @THEKJA

Summary: There's something fishy going on in the Unnatural Quarter. Bodies are floating face-down, the plumbing is backing up, and something smells rotten—even to a zombie detective like Dan Shamble. Diving into the slimy underbelly of a diabolical plot, Dan comes face-to-tentacles with an amphibious villain named Ah'Chulhu (to which the usual response is "Gesundheit!"). With his snap-happy gang of gator-guys—former pets flushed down the toilet—Ah'Chulhu wreaks havoc beneath the streets. While feuding weather wizards kick up storms and a gang of thieving lawn gnomes continues their reign of terror, Dan Shamble is running out of time—before the whole stinking city goes down the drain.…

Review: I came across this little gem while I was perusing the audio book collection at my local library. The name caught my eye and so I had to turn it over and read the summary and I was hooked. It has everything I enjoy; zombies, humor, crime and detectives. I have a 40 minute commute to work and I need entertainment. Anderson's book was exactly what I needed. I was laughing through out the story. The depth of curious and odd characters was just awesome. I was swapping cds as fast I as I could, eager to hear what happened next. And a lot does happen, three major stories are juggled with ease and happily come together to tie the whole book with a big bright happy bow. I have not read/listened to a book as funny as Slimy Underbelly.
I must add that Phil Gigante read this book beautifully. Many can read a book out loud but Gigante performs and tells a story. He gives every character their own voice and identity. It made this book ever more enjoyable.
I highly recommend picking this book up. It is extremely entertaining and immensely fun.

Review: Beyond Hades (The Prometheus Wars - Book 1) by Luke Romyn @LukeRomyn

Beyond Hades (The Prometheus Wars - Book 1)

Summary:

What if mythology isn't myth? The ancient Greeks told fabulously detailed stories involving unbelievable creatures - monsters dominating all tales from that time. Were they just highly imaginative, or was their inspiration from somewhere else? Doctor Talbot Harrison, a professor in archeology, receives a phone call one day which will destroy everything he perceives as reality. His brother has been mysteriously killed and within moments the United States Military appear at his door, literally dragging him from his home. Thrown into a helicopter under intense armed guard, it doesn't take long until they are attacked by something which cannot possibly exist, something drawn to destroy the one man who can stop the beasts from a land beyond Hades....

Review:

I was excited to read my first book by Luke Romyn. I've followed his promotions for Beyond Hades for a while on the Internet. I had the pleasure to take part in one of those promotions and received a free copy of Beyond Hades. I kept it on the back burner and promised myself to read it later. I am happy to report that I got to finally read it and was glad I did. It is a fun supercharged adventure through time and space, with cool tech and even cooler monsters willing to swallow a man whole, body and soul. Emphasis on soul. There are are some terrifying creatures in this story.
I loved Romyn's own take on mythology and how he brought it to the real world in a believable yet still godlike way. The main character, Doctor Talbot Harrison, goes through his own personal struggle though the whole story. Continually pushed by his guardian, Wes. Wes is the ultimate soldier and comic relief. You will love getting to know Wes.
I recommend reading this if you love fun and adventure. The action keeps coming and the tension keeps building until the final battle that is really well written. Romyn lays out the scene and the camera in your mind will take it from there. You will not be disappointed.

Pagan's Sphinx by William Webster @huwdthomas

Pagan's Sphinx

A battered journal left by the lone survivor of a plane crash provides a tantalising clue to an ancient mystery…

After years of leading overland expeditions all over the world, Ben Drummond is trying to settle down in England and forget the woman who broke his heart.

But he is summoned to Oxford by maverick archaeologist Dr Sarah Pagan, who believes she has discovered the whereabouts of a lost statue. Pagan believes the statue - of an ancient sphinx - could be even older than the Pyramids.

Proving its existence would turn conventional history on its head –allowing Pagan to vindicate herself and reclaim her lost reputation.

Pagan wants Ben to lead an expedition that will take her team deep into the desolate landscape of the Western Sahara.

Their first hurdle is to find the unmarked wreck of the crashed plane – but Ben soon realises they are not the only ones on the trail. A gang of art thieves have got wind of Pagan’s quest and are trying to follow the team so that they can loot the site for themselves.

Blacklisted by Luke Romyn @LukeRomyn

Blacklisted
Luke Romyn

Nobody can escape their past. It will always be there, returning to haunt you in the darkest times of your life.

Mike Swanson knows this - his past torments him daily and he sets himself upon a path of death and misery. He justifies his dark deeds by enacting them upon those he perceives as evil, not knowing that the real evil lies within himself.

Killing the scum of society, Mike becomes one of them and draws the attention of a group who require people with his skills. Unwillingly enlisted into the notorious 'Blacklisted Brotherhood', Mike must first survive horrendous training in order to hunt down a madman whose deeds will see the world plunged into anarchy if he succeeds.

Blasting across continents in their pursuit of justice, the team will come together in ways that they had never imagined and must learn to trust each other if they are to survive.

For if they die, it could mean the end of freedom.

Will Mike survive the confrontations in order to see out the mission, or will he cut loose and run from the responsibility that has been placed upon him? Why should he care for the people of the world when they have never cared for him?

Why indeed...?
