Review: The Ice Limit by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child

This is a fun story but extremely predictable as far as I'm concerned. There is a lot of science in this book. A lot. But the scientists are dumb because I new before they did what was coming at every turn/ That  makes it less enjoyable than hoped. Also the ending is a real downer. I hear there are indirect sequels to the story that I have yet to hear. I liked the premise and I am hopeful that that the entire story arc is more satisfying than the this story on it's own.

Ruth Bleakley-Thiessen: I'm an author, also a coach and an artist. I've just published 2 non-fiction ebooks - one for Women:Woman Rise and Shine - a simple path for women who want to be themselves and Flown the Coop - a guide to dealing with transition when the kids leave home.

TDIS: What are you trying to accomplish as a writer?
RBT: I have put all of my own experience and that of 12 years of coaching into these two books, offering a set-out guide to look at what comes up for you and how to deal with it. My own 3 kids left home within 9 months and I realized that there weren't too many books on the market to go to for some help. It's a huge transition people go through. I interviewed many parents and have given conclusions from these interviews. I want to give this to others who were in the same position as I was. The book for women takes a look at the life of a woman, especially from my perspective, as I grew up in a male dominated world. I had to find out for myself what it takes to be a woman, and I have been working with women for 12 years now, specializing in feminine problems. It's not that we have to look for something, we have to peel back the things keeping us back from being our real selves. This book shows us the importance of having other women in our lives, as it used to be within a women's circle.

TDIS: When is your book available?
RBT: These books have been available since 1st March 2016. I'm writing another one for women about how they can tidy up their lives, as soon as I have the two translated into German and published. I declared last year as the year of writing for me, and managed the two books I most wanted to write. I thoroughly enjoyed the process.

Review: Extinction Evolution (The Extinction Cycle Book 4) by Nicholas Sansbury Smith

I picked this up without knowledge of the books prior to its release. It's the fourth in series. What drew me immediately was the reader, Bronson Pinchot. Maybe you don't know Bronson like I know Bronson. He has a very special place in my heart as an actor from a TV series called Perfect Strangers 

I loved that show. But you are wondering about the audiobook. It is well read by Bronson. It is well written by Nicholas Sansbury Smith. The story of a world devastated by a virus outbreak where an elite fighting force works to gather as much data on a new species formed by the virus in order to kill the variants and take back earth as the dominate species.

I enjoyed the book despite not having read (heard) the other audiobooks. I would love to see how this series ends. The final book volume was released in February and the audiobook will be available April 19th.

I hope you pick this gem up. I love finding a new author what can write good stories and has other books available to gobble up. Look forward to more reviews for this author.

Review of Slimy Underbelly (Dan Shamble Zombie P. I.) by Kevin J. Anderson @THEKJA

Review: I came across this little gem while I was perusing the audio book collection at my local library. The name caught my eye and so I had to turn it over and read the summary and I was hooked. It has everything I enjoy; zombies, humor, crime and detectives. I have a 40 minute commute to work and I need entertainment. Anderson's book was exactly what I needed. I was laughing through out the story. The depth of curious and odd characters was just awesome. I was swapping cds as fast I as I could, eager to hear what happened next. And a lot does happen, three major stories are juggled with ease and happily come together to tie the whole book with a big bright happy bow. I have not read/listened to a book as funny as Slimy Underbelly. 
I must add that Phil Gigante read this book beautifully. Many can read a book out loud but Gigante performs and tells a story. He gives every character their own voice and identity. It made this book ever more enjoyable.  
I highly recommend picking this book up. It is extremely entertaining and immensely fun.

Kate L. Mary: I’m a stay-at-home mom of four and an Air Force wife. I grew up in a small town just north of Dayton, Ohio where I met my husband at the age of twelve. Ten years later, we got married, and since then we’ve lived in Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, and California. We currently live in Oklahoma.

As a writer, I like to create new realities and worlds. I enjoy any post-apocalyptic story, especially if zombies are involved, but there needs to be a romantic twist to give the story hope. When I write I prefer nerdy or non-traditional heroes who can make you laugh to hunky pieces of man-meat. Characters with baggage are especially enjoyable, because there’s so much you can do with them.

The Digital Ink Spot: What are you trying to accomplish as a writer? What is your latest story about?

Kate L. Mary: Mainly, I want to get my stories out there to as many people as possible. I have two books out now, but they are both part of a series, and a have a couple more I’d like to get out soon.

My most recent release is Broken World, the first book in my post-apocalyptic zombie series. Think of it as, The Walking Dead meets The Stand.

Kate L. Mary: Broken World and the sequel, Shattered World, is out now. I have the third book, Mad World, done as well and plan to release that in January 2015. I wanted to release them close together since they do end with cliffhangers.

Kate L. Mary: I wrote on and off when I was younger, but college and marriage and kids made it tough. When we moved to California in 2011. I found myself with a lot of free time. My husband was gone a lot, we lived really far from our friends and family. Suddenly, all those stories I’d had tucked away came out. Since then, I haven’t stopped. I've written a lot, but most of the early stuff still needs a lot of work. It’s a skill that gets better with practice, and the most recent things I've written look nothing like the first couple books.

The Digital Ink Spot: Why should people read your stories? What sets them apart from the rest?
Kate L. Mary: My book, Collision, is a new adult romantic mystery. New adult is popular right now, but what sets my book apart from most of what’s out there is the fact that it has a plot other than just romance. There is romance, but it’s a sweet story, not sexy/steamy like the majority of the books available. My male character is also different than most of the men portrayed in these books. He’s a nice guy. I don’t know where this idea came from that in order to be desirable characters the men have to be jerks, but those are not the kind of characters I write.

Broken World is unique in the zombie world because it starts before the dead come back, giving you lots of time to get to know the characters. This book is about so much more than zombie. It’s about family and survival and love and learning to trust. I like to focus on the people in an apocalyptic situation. Also, I believe this is a book that would be enjoyable even for people who don’t necessarily love the genre. Check out the reviews on Goodreads and you’ll find a couple people who have read and loved it, but don’t like zombies. It’s because the focus on this book isn’t blood and gore (there is some of that though).

The Digital Ink Spot caught up with author, Karen V.Williams. She says she didn’t have the time to sit down and write full time until she was a grandmother. After her husband’s death four years ago, she needed to work. Not because he left her penniless, but because it filled her days and because it was what she’d wanted to do all her life. For nearly 30 years, she had been researching and working part time on the story of her ancestor, Mary Bliss Parsons, who was tried for witchcraft in 1675, 17 years before the Salem Witch Trials. “My Enemy’s Tears: The Witch of Northampton” was published in 2011. Since then she has written a mixed genre book (literary fiction/mystery) which is now in the hands of her agent. 

The Digital Ink Spot: What are you trying to accomplish as a writer? What is your latest story about?

Karen V.Williams: Can’t say I’m trying to accomplish anything with writing other than telling the stories I want to tell. My upcoming book is titled “The House on Seventh Street.” I set it in my home town of Grand Junction, CO where my family settled in the very early 20th century. It’s a story about going home again—something  you aren’t supposed to be able to do—and learning that you really didn’t know your parents and grandparents at all, that they weren’t who you thought they were when you were a child, that they had secrets and some of these would always remain a mystery.

Interview with Professor Leonard Birdsong @Prof_Birdsong

The Digital Ink Spot had the pleasure to interview Professor Leonard Birdsong. Professor Leonard Birdsong lives in Orlando, Florida where he teaches Criminal Law, White Collar Crime, Evidence, and Immigration Law. He received his Juris Doctor degree from the Harvard Law School and his Bachelor’s degree from Howard University. He has written many scholarly legal pieces since joining the legal academy.

He has written a series of humor books on Criminal Law styled Professor Birdsong’s Weird Criminal Law Stories, Volumes 1-6. They are not scholarly pieces! The Weird Criminal Law Stories are written just for fun and enjoyment.

Professor Birdsong is proud of his legal career which included his work as an attorney with the law firm of Baker & Hostetler. Later he served as a diplomat with the State Department with various postings in Nigeria, Germany, and the Bahamas. Professor Birdsong also worked as a federal prosecutor, first as an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, and later as a Special Assistant United States Attorney for the U.S. Virgin Islands.

 After leaving government service, Professor Birdsong was in private practice in Washington, D.C., where he specialized in trial work ranging from criminal defense work to political asylum matters. The Digital Ink Spot: Please introduce youself to the readers.

My name is Jeffrey F. Barken. I am the author of This Year in Jerusalem, a collection of short stories loosely based on my experiences as a kibbutz volunteer in Israel 2009-2010. During the time I was abroad, I lived, worked, and traveled throughout the middle east. My fiction re-imagines the country and the characters I met in a series of interconnected stories that leave readers feeling as though they have read a full length novel. Each story is beautifully illustrated by Irish artist,  Diana Muller. There is a short Author's note at the back of the book explaining how we met.    

I first published This Year in Jerusalem in May of 2013 and have been on book tour ever since, promoting the collection. Last summer I traveled first to Scotland, Ireland and Germany where Diana and I teamed up for a book signing event. Later I traveled to Israel where I spent 11 months riding the trains daily, traveling up and down the country, introducing myself to strangers in Hebrew and English, and peddling books. The Tour was a great success. The book sold over 1,000 copies and an additional 100 copies were purchased by the Norman Tel Aviv Hotel, a boutique establishment that will feature the book in all of its guest rooms. The stories do not advance any political ideology or arrogant propaganda. On the contrary they offer a refreshing outsider's perspective of Israeli culture and the conflicts that plague the region. It's the perfect read for first time visitors! 

The Digital Ink Spot: What are you trying to accomplish as a writer? What is your latest story about?

Jeffrey F. Barken: In addition to writing fiction I am also the founder and chief editor of Monologging.org, an online literary arts magazine that connects writers with artists around the world encouraging collaborative multimedia creation. The publication also provides weekly arts-related reporting. My ambition as a writer and a publicist is to assist in building creative networks that can provide writers and artists with quality feedback, and to promote artistic experimentation. In my own fiction, I try to tell the truth about our world, chronicling emotions and events through the eyes of lovable though often deeply faulted characters. My current work in progress is a novel entitled "All the Lonely Boys in New York," it tells the story of a failed terrorist attack in New York City, and reflects on the early days of the credit crisis, when banks and companies were failing daily...

Jeffrey F. Barken: As a writer, I've always subscribed to Hemingway's time-honored advice; write truly, based on what you know, and do your best work, given the time and the circumstances... My collection of short stories, This Year in Jerusalem, was inspired by my experiences abroad and therefore came from a very personal place. I think readers appreciate the adventure spirit that shines throughout the book as strange and unexpected encounters with eccentric character lead the narrator to make emotional confessions and detailed musings. The fact that all the stories connect adds another element, allowing readers to interact with each story in intriguing ways. Likewise, working with Diana to illustrate the book was an amazing and extremely fulfilling experience. She has never traveled to Israel, yet her pictures, based on my words, capture what I had witnessed abroad exactly. I take her amazing effort to portray my scenes as confirmation that I've done my work well, telling a story truthfully and honestly. Since publishing TYIJ, I've continued to grow as a writer and am taking new risks. Marc D Brown: My main mission in life is to be a recognized poet, when I say "recognized" I don't mean that I'm in it for the fame and fortune, I just want people to know of my work. Obviously if the fortune came a long, I wouldn"t complain.....I do need a new car and we're saving for a house, so yeah the fortune would help. I want to change peoples minds on what poetry is, it can be done differently nowadays, my style has been described as "unique" by a twitter follower recently, I believe it is! It's poetry for everyone, I'm a normal guy so I write about normal things that go on in my head; yes, sometimes it may come across as strange but it will pull you in. There's subjects about life, love, death, work, regret etc. Things we all feel as human beings put down in an easy to read way. I guarantee you will find a poem you like.

Marc D Brown: I currently have 3 ebooks published on Amazons Kindle platform, two of which are poetry collections Words of Marc D Brown & 20Seven. My third book is a short horror/gore story, my first real attempt at story writing. If you liked American Psycho, then the chances are you will probably like this.

Currently I'm compiling a third collection of poetry which I'm pretty excited about; I had a year off from writing, whenever I put pen to paper I felt everything I wrote was crap and just too forced...it wasn't right so I stopped trying. Nearly a year later I clearly found my muse as I've been writing a few pieces each week (when I was younger I wrote a few pieces each day...I obviously had a lot more to say back then, haha)

The Digital Ink Spot: Please share with the reader who you are.  
Justin Bienvenue: I am Justin Bienvenue and as a writer I am an author an poet. Some days I write poetry and other days I write short stories it really depends on the type of writing mood I’m in. On a really good day I could write both. My inspiration is endless coming from what I see outside and inside around me or what I watch on television and take in, again my inspiration for poems and stories is truly endless and could come from anywhere or anything. As a writer I like to be simple, meaning I write in a way to which the reader can understand, enjoy and even visualize what they are reading without getting confused. I really started writing for a career a few years back when I decided to write a book upon a lazy day in which I felt there was nothing I could do to get myself-esteem going again. My writing roots in the sense of poetry date back to my freshman year of high school in which I frequently wrote poetry on and off. I have a background in creative writing and write in all kinds of forms of poetry such as free verse, rhyme and prose just to name a few. The writer in me is a lot more eager and determined then regular me, every now and then my writer part tries to encourage regular me to get a jump start. When my mind is completely set and I have lots of thoughts running there is no telling what creation my imagination can come up with.

The Digital Ink Spot:  What are you trying to accomplish as a writer? 
Justin Bienvenue: I am trying to accomplish success, I am trying to become an establish and well respected writer. For people to read one of my books and enjoy it so much that they want to read more of my works. As a writer I want to give readers a truly enjoyable story or poem and open up their horizons to my style. I want to accomplish recognition as not only an author but as a poet, since poetry tends to go less noticeable these days I want to try and open peoples eye’s to it and give them a new found appreciation for it.
My latest book is just that, poetry. It is called Like A Box of Chocolates and it is a book of 40 poems within many different genres. For those who like horror, science fiction, mystery, fantasy, romance, bizarre, whatever it may be there is a poem for everyone to enjoy. I came up with the idea after making up poem titles to which I would have friends vote for on Facebook after a while I had enough poems to the point that I decided that a book should be made. I like to consider this book a buffet of poetry because there’s all different types of genres to read and you can read a few and then go back in for more.

Justin Bienvenue: My book is currently available now on Amazon and Createspace. I started writing the poems around two years ago and it wasn’t until back in January that I started putting them together into a book.

Justin Bienvenue: People should read my works because they are unique and original. They are my spins on poetry and stories. Chances are when you read my work your reading something you’ve either never read before or you usually don’t read on a regular basis. I try to separate myself from others when it comes to writing and I like to think I have done just that. The Digital Ink Spot: Who is Deanna Kahler?
Deanna Kahler: I'm a proud mom and an accomplished writer. I was born and raised in the Detroit, Mich., area. My love of writing began as a young child, and I was often found writing poems, short stories and plays. I've always been creative, sensitive and highly motivated. I hold a bachelor's degree in Communication Arts from Oakland University in Rochester, Mich., where I graduated with departmental honors. I've worked professionally as both a writer and editor, and my work has been published in numerous corporate newsletters and magazines across the country. I've written three books so far. My memoir, From Pain to Parenthood, was named a finalist in the 2014 Next Generation Indie Book Awards in the Parenting/Family category. I'm quite proud of this accomplishment and the positive difference this book has made on the lives of those who have suffered miscarriages and are considering adoption. When I'm not writing, I love spending time with my family and especially enjoy being outside.

The Digital Ink Spot: What are you trying to accomplish as a writer? What is your latest story about?
Deanna Kahler: My goal is always to touch lives and inspire others. I write to make a difference in the world. My latest book, A Rare Gem, is a children's story about self-worth. The message to kids is that it's okay to be different and that every person is unique and special. The story follows Princess Towonga, a very tiny girl who is the size of a Barbie doll. She often feels left out because she can't participate in the same activities as her friends. Then one day the princess must perform a special task that only she can do. That's when she realizes that she doesn't need to be like anyone else.

I also have an adult fiction paranormal book, Echoes of Paradise, which was released earlier this year. Echoes of Paradise is about the afterlife and the power of love. The main character, Celeste, loses a former love who was also her soulmate. She then starts noticing many strange coincidences that seem to be connected to him. She wonders if his spirit is reaching out to her and embarks on an incredible journey of self-discovery and spiritual awakening. Anyone who has lost a loved one will relate to her grief and emotions. And all readers will be inspired by the touching love story and beautiful imagery.

The Digital Ink Spot: When is your newest book available?
Deanna Kahler: A Rare Gem is available now on Amazon.com. The paperback was released on May 17, 2014, and the Kindle version was available a few weeks prior to that. I'm also now working on Visions of Mortality, which will be a stand-alone sequel to Echoes of Paradise. The book will feature a few of the original characters and also have a paranormal theme, but it isn't necessary to read the first book in order to enjoy it.

Deanna Kahler: My stories come from my heart and soul. My writing is genuine, and I use my life experiences to craft an imaginative yet realistic story. When readers pick up one of my books, they can expect to not only be entertained but also get a glimpse of who I am. Like I said, I strive to make a difference in the world, so each of my books includes a life challenge or struggle that the main character must work to overcome. For this reason, my stories are universal in appeal and can be enjoyed by everyone.
