Beyond the Crystal City by Logan Brookfield @loganbrookfield

Free for a Limited Time,

Click Now on the Cover Photo.

Time is running out and there is only one chance to save mankind.

One outpost is left on a dying Earth and holds what’s left of humanity. Millions of people crammed into a few square miles resulting in overcrowding, starvation, pollution and a daily fight for survival in a crime and disease-ridden city.

The Continental Wars that started in 2167, and only ended when the entire population of the planet was nearly wiped out, were shortly followed by an increase in temperature and the melting of the ice caps. This created global flooding and devastation until the waters receded and the oceans all but dried up in the boiling heat. Global warming and toxic fallout created an environment not fit for humans or animals. The ancients had created a double death blow with their wars, overpopulation and mass industrialisation, raping and pillaging the planet of its natural resources along the way.

Carl is a scavenger and survivor, born in the dust of the old city. One day, while out searching for supplies, he uncovers a secret plan to solve the Earth's resource problems once and for all. The elite say it’s a brilliant plan, one that will restore humans to their former glory, while others know it's madness and risks the destruction of mankind.

Review: The Butterflies by Kimberley Waldron

In any town, there are bound to be a few bad apples. And the people of Larchmont, Texas are learning that they live among unsavory neighbors and work among unprincipled co-workers. The folks at the Larchmont PD are no exception. They are all flawed, but they have to work together to solve the biggest crime in the town's history. When a string of bizarre murders plagues Larchmont, Texas, a rural town drowning in sweltering heat, the residents witness a string of murders, and it gets easier and easier to predict who might be next. A pedophile preying on unsuspecting children. A funeral director taking advantage of his clients in their time of grief. A wretched old woman murdering animals. A heartless government employee who steals money from schoolchildren. As the worst of Larchmont's citizens keep dying, the people can't help but cheer for the killer. Can justice be served if people sympathize with a psychotic serial killer? Does their sympathy cross a forbidden line in the sand? Will this killer pay for these crimes, which leave the town a better place, or will the killer walk away? A skillfully written, twisting, fast-paced read that is complex enough to keep you interested and maintains your curiosity to the last page.

Review: What a great plot. If the the worst people in town were killed, would anyone care? Maybe their families, if they treated them well. In this story, few weep for the dead. I was surprised until the reveal of the killer and to be honest I was confused by it. I didn't expect it. I believed there was going to be a twist. There's all ways a twist. Details through out the book come together at the end. It was really cool how Waldron brings it all together. I enjoyed it.

Now assigned to DI Donald Murphy’s team, she finds herself in the grip of a northern British winter, investigating the kidnap-murders of two young women - both strikingly similar in appearance. When a third is taken, they have less than a week to chip away the secrets of a high-society family, and uncover the killer’s objective.
But Richard - the father of the latest victim - believes the police are not moving quickly enough, so launches a parallel investigation, utilising skills honed in a dark past that is about to catch up with him.
As Richard’s secret actions hinder the police, Alicia remains in contact with him, and even starts to fall for his charms, forcing her into choices that will impact the rest of her life.

Review - Lisey's Story by Stephen King

Lisey Debusher Landon lost her husband Scott two years ago, after a twenty-five year marriage of the most profound and sometimes frightening intimacy. Scott was an award-winning, bestselling novelist and a very complicated man. Early in their relationship, before they married, Lisey had to learn from him about books and blood and bools. Later, she understood that there was a place Scott went -- a place that both terrified and healed him, could eat him alive or give him the ideas he needed in order to live. Now it's Lisey's turn to face Scott's demons, Lisey's turn to go to Boo'ya Moon. What begins as a widow's effort to sort through the papers of her celebrated husband becomes a nearly fatal journey into the darkness he inhabited. Perhaps King's most personal and powerful story ever, Lisey's Story is about the wellsprings of creativity, the temptations of madness, and the secret language of love.

Bool? A new word introduced by Stephen King into my vocabulary. Read this story and you will learn it about it and eventually understand it. It is the thread that binds everything together. What I can tell you after finishing this is that it's a wonderful story. The first third is a drag. Introductions and definitions really of all the words and ideas you will follow for the rest of this book.

The story flashbacks a lot but it is essential to the story as every reveal from the past is relevant for the present. It is done well and draws you into the bizarre world of Scott and Lisey. The villain is a real terror and the reader presented the character is a way I could only imagine Matthew McConaughey playing the character in my mind. Mare Winningham read this book so well. It was a pleasure to hear her.

Get this book, it is awesome! A short interview with Stephen King follows the story. He gives insight to where this story came from.

BOOL! The end.

Greatest Hits: An Anthology in Four Volumes by Daniel Thomas MacInnes @GhibliBlog

Free for a Limited Time,
Click Now on the Cover Photo.

Greatest Hits is “An Anthology in Four Volumes” that examines, dissects and satirizes every angle of the pop culture universe: film and television, animation and live-action, rock and jazz music, vinyl records, classic video games, politics and daily life. Writer and artist Daniel Thomas MacInnes delivers his signature style of sharp wit, biting sarcasm, warm nostalgia, and the search for the cultural threads that bring us all together.

In Greatest Hits, MacInnes presents, in a incisive collection of essays and personal stories, the trivial absurdity and profound brilliance of modern life. These include denouncing the media circus surrounding Michael Jackson's untimely death ("Now Watch the Thriller Zombies Chew On the Corpse"), championing the genius of 1970s Miles Davis ("Get Up With It"), conjuring childhood memories of video games ("Seven Cities of Gold"), and celebrating the animated movies of Studio Ghibli ("My Neighbor Totoro," "Spirited Away").

Like everyone's favorite “greatest hits” albums, this book is a fitting portrait of the artist, and a perfect distillation of a singular and irresistible literary voice.

Review: Look Again by Lisa Scottoline

When reporter Ellen Gleeson gets a "Have You Seen This Child?" flyer in the mail, she almost throws it away. But something about it makes her look again, and her heart stops―the child in the photo is identical to her adopted son, Will. Her every instinct tells her to deny the similarity between the boys, because she knows her adoption was lawful. But she's a journalist and won't be able to stop thinking about the photo until she figures out the truth. And she can't shake the question: if Will rightfully belongs to someone else, should she keep him or give him up? She investigates, uncovering clues no one was meant to discover, and when she digs too deep, she risks losing her own life―and that of the son she loves.

Review: This was a very emotion story. It was really well done.  I liked it a lot. The character development was spot on. I liked the details of motherhood. The slow churn of the mystery blossoming into a thriller was great. It may not follow the letter of the law regarding child custody but I have no idea what that my be anyway. This is not a documentary on a real event. It's for fun and fun it is.

Mary Stuart Masterson did a great job reading the story. Gives each character life and their own identity. I would love it hear another story read by her.

This is a great story and includes a short interview with the author.

Buy it from me now.

A Christmas Carol with original illustrations by Charles Dickens

Free for a Limited Time,
Click Now on the Cover Photo.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL is a novella by Charles Dickens, first published in London on December 1843. The novella met with instant success and critical acclaim. A Christmas Carol tells the story of a bitter old miser named Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation into a gentler, kindlier man after visitations by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come. The book was written at a time when the British were examining and exploring Christmas traditions from the past as well as new customs such as Christmas cards and Christmas trees. Carol singing took a new lease on life during this time. Dickens' sources for the tale appear to be many and varied, but are, principally, the humiliating experiences of his childhood, his sympathy for the poor, and various Christmas stories and fairy tales.

Dickens was not the first author to celebrate the Christmas season in literature, but it was he who superimposed his humanitarian vision of the holiday upon the public, an idea that has been termed as Dickens' "Carol Philosophy". Dickens believed the best way to reach the broadest segment of the population regarding his concerns about poverty and social injustice was to write a deeply felt Christmas story rather than polemical pamphlets and essays. Dickens' career as a best-selling author was on the wane, and the writer felt he needed to produce a tale that would prove both profitable and popular. Dickens' visit to the work-worn industrial city of Manchester was the "spark" that fired the author to produce a story about the poor, a repentant miser, and redemption that would become A Christmas Carol. The forces that inspired Dickens to create a powerful, impressive and enduring tale were the profoundly humiliating experiences of his childhood, the plight of the poor and their children during the boom decades of the 1830s and 1840s, and Washington Irving's essays on old English Christmas traditions published in his Sketch Book (1820); and fairy tales and nursery stories, as well as satirical essays and religious tracts.

It's 1949. World War II is over, but it has a way of haunting people for years to come.

Gordon Sandalwood suspects his wife Edith is hiding something from him, and he asks Denver private investigator Dewey Webb to find out what. Dewey, toughened by his own war experiences, reluctantly takes the case, certain it will lead to nothing. But when he sees Edith rendezvous with a mysterious man, Dewey realizes his assumptions might be wrong. As he digs deeper to identify the stranger, he turns up secrets that reach back into the war, and as he unravels a web of deceit, he discovers who has the most to gain, and the most to lose.

A hard-boiled, historical mystery that's great for fans who love a traditional detective crime story with a noir flavor, but without a lot of sex or swearing.

Review - Obsession by Jonathan Kellerman

Tanya Bigelow was a solemn little girl when Dr. Alex Delaware successfully treated her obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

Now, at nineteen, Patty Bigelow, Tanya’s aunt and adoptive mother, has made a deathbed confession of murder and urged the young woman to seek Delaware’s help. Armed with only the vaguest details, Delaware follows a trail twisting from L.A.’s sleaziest low-rent districts to its overblown mansions, retracing Patty and Tanya’s nomadic and increasingly puzzling life.

Then a very real murder tears open a terrifying tunnel into the past, where secrets–and bodies–are buried. Dramatic, action-packed, and filled with the psychological detail that only Jonathan Kellerman can provide, Obsession is a whodunit, a whydunit–and something unique: a did-it-even-happen? This is Kellerman at his heart-racing best.

Review: The story begins 19 years in the past with the introduction to Tanya Bigelow's Mother and her Aunt. Tanya's mother tries but ultimately gives up mothering and leaves Tanya with Patty. Patty's dark childhood pushes Patty to make difficult choices for Tanya benefit and the mystery begins.

Tanya has suffered from OCD since childhood and a confession by Patty pushes Tanya to learn what her adopted mother's encrypted words mean. She seeks out her old doctor to help her cope and to help solve this mystery.

Dr. Delaware and Lt. Milo Sturgis to the rescue. Going forward it's a police procedural story. There are some really strange and disgusting characters our heroes come across. When you turn over rocks, you will eventually find snakes and scorpions. It's not a fast paced novel, it's a flower slowly opening. After all is said and done the show down at high noon breaks the doldrums. Unfortunately, the action is passively described afterward.
John Rubinstein reads and does a good job giving life to each character. I enjoyed his reading. The story was very much like an episode of Law and Order. I like that TV show so if you do too, you'll like this book too.

Rick Black and Jake McShane are former law school classmates with very different approaches to life and the law. Rick is a brilliant, ultracompetitive trial lawyer who believes winning is everything. He openly mocks the legal system, claiming that a lawyer who is a great storyteller can fool a jury every time. He is determined to exploit that weakness in our system, regardless of the havoc that wreaks on innocent lives. When an upstanding pillar of the community is victimized by Rick’s unscrupulous tactics, Jake is determined to bring his former classmate to justice—if he can do so without sacrificing his own integrity. Their approaches, skills and convictions are put to the test when they clash as opposing counsel in a high-stakes class action lawsuit. Dirty tricks, intimidation, intrigue—even homicide—become part of the backdrop as the litigation unfolds. Consequential Damages is a compelling legal drama full of twists, turns and suspense. And, it will make you think!

Review - The Vendetta Defense by Lisa Scottoline

In The Vendetta Defense, Lisa Scottoline, New York Times bestselling author of Moment of Truth and Mistaken Identity, tells a wonderfully rich story of past sins, love and justice. Lawyer Judy Carrier takes the case of an elderly pigeon racer, Tony Lucia, who has been arrested for the murder of his lifelong enemy Angelo Coluzzi. "Pigeon Tony," as he's known, confesses to Judy that he killed Coluzzi because of a vendetta begun more than fifty years ago. Her client's guilt, however, is only the beginning of Judy's problems. The Coluzzi family wants revenge, and they are determined to finish off Pigeon Tony and Judy before the case can go to trial.

Review: Pigeon Tony is the most interesting character in this story.  His back story about his life in Italy and how he met his wife and their love story is really cute and really touching. That alone is worth listening to this story.

There is also a murder trial thrown in there too. The trial itself was a slam dunk of a trial for me to be questioning whether Pigeon Tony would be acquitted or not. Spoiler alert! He's beats the wrap. Shocking! It was a good procedural to follow but we all know how this was going to end. What you don't know is if Judy will survive this case unscathed.

Kate Burton does a really good job carrying off so many men's voices and representing the broken English. Scottoline conveys the immigrants with out stereotyping them. It was refreshing. It was well written and well read. I enjoyed it.

Review - Digital Fortress by Dan Brown

Digital Fortress transports the reader deep within the most powerful intelligence organization on earth–the National Security Agency (NSA)–an ultra-secret, multi-billion dollar agency which (until now) less than three percent of Americans knew existed.

When the NSA’s most classified technological wonder–an invincible code-breaking machine–encounters a mysterious code it cannot break, the agency calls in its head cryptographer, Susan Fletcher, a brilliant and beautiful mathematician. What she uncovers sends shock waves through the corridors of power.

The NSA is being held hostage… not by guns or bombs, but by a code so ingeniously complex that if released it will cripple U.S. intelligence.

Caught in an accelerating tempest of secrecy and lies, Susan Fletcher battles to save the agency she believes in. Betrayed on all sides she finds herself fighting not only for her country, but for her life, and in the end, for the life of the man she loves.

With a startling twist that leaves the agency scrambling to avert the biggest intelligence disaster in U.S. history, Digital Fortress never lets up. From the underground hallways of power, to the skyscrapers of Tokyo, to the towering cathedrals of Spain, a desperate race unfolds.

It is a battle for survival — a crucial bid to destroy a creation of inconceivable genius… an impregnable code-writing formula that threatens to obliterate the balance of power. Forever.

Review: I've seen the movies but this is my introduction to Dan Brown's written work. There are some truly inventive plot points in this story that made me appreciate Mr. Brown's craft. It is a fun and fast paced adventure. Jumping from story arch to arch back and forth at the most crucial moments in each characters story. Brown keeps it lively and exciting.

I was disappointed with the riddle at the end of the book. With a nations best cryptographer coming up blank and me screaming at my CD player, the answer, it was frustrating. It was too easy for me to solve but it could be I'm a super genius. Don't feel bad if you don't get it right a way.

The reader, Bruce Sabath did a wonderful job.  Put him on your to-listen-to list. He really does each character justice, developing their individuality.

Great story and great reader. Check this one out.

Howard Phillips Lovecraft was an American author who achieved posthumous fame through his influential works of horror fiction. Virtually unknown and only published in pulp magazines before he died in poverty, he is now regarded as one of the most significant 20th-century authors in his genre. Lovecraft was born in Providence, Rhode Island, where he spent most of his life. Among his most celebrated tales is "The Call of Cthulhu", canonical to the Cthulhu Mythos. Never able to support himself from earnings as author and editor, Lovecraft saw commercial success increasingly elude him in this latter period, partly because he lacked the confidence and drive to promote himself. He subsisted in progressively straitened circumstances in his last years; an inheritance was completely spent by the time he died at the age of 46.
