Review - Shades of Gray by Andy Holloman @AndyHolloman

Shades of Gray by Andy Holloman

The author offers this synopsis of the book:

In the Fall of 2001, John’s life has fallen off a cliff. His six- year-old daughter, Lucy, needs a kidney transplant and his Durham, NC travel agency has been wrecked by the events of 9/11. He must find a way to secure a large amount of money quickly in order to pay for Lucy’s surgery. He’s been in tight places before but he’s currently out of solutions. Wanda, a client of John’s travel agency, has had her livelihood hit hard by 9/11 also. She can no longer transport cocaine via airline flights due to increase airport security. Like John, she is a single parent and has wanted to get out of her line of work for several years. She needs more money to allow her and daughter Tonya, to move from Durham to California and break free of her boss, Jamel. John and Wanda form a partnership around a plan to smuggle cocaine via cruise ships. His industry knowledge and connections would remove the transportation risks and she could handle the distribution and selling once they brought the drugs back to Durham. Despite being nearly killed on their first run, it worked. Wanda coaxes John into another trip while Jamel is becoming suspicious of Wanda. John’s half-brother Travis, a Durham police detective battling his own demons, can’t connect the dots between John and Wanda . He continues to line his pocket with ill-gotten gains. Lucy and John are the most important people in his life and he would gladly provide them with financial help, if only John would ask.
It's very rare to see an author knock it out of the park their first time up to bat. I believe Holloman has done just that with Shades of Gray.

Holloman has created a complex and intriguing crime world in Durham, North Carolina. It begins with the most unfortunate car crash. A little girl crying for her father who is slipping in and out of consciousness. He tries desperately to pull himself together to save his daughter. Will he reach her in time? Hollomon ends the chapter with that question unanswered and teleports you in time to introduce you to the stories main characters. Slowly he moves you forward in time and turns up the heat of suspense that builds to a boiling point that finally bubbles over and returns you to the exact moment Hollomon left us at chapter one.

It's an amazing story and I highly recommend it.

Review - Psychosomatic by Anthony Neil Smith @DocNoir

Psychosomatic by Anthony Neil Smith

The author offers this synopsis of the book:
Because Lydia didn't have arms or legs, she shelled out three thousand bucks to a washed up middleweight named Cap to give her ex-husband the beating of his life.

But the beating turns to murder, and the murder into lust and desperation between Lydia and an underworld clean-up man. Meanwhile, overgrown frat boy car thieves take up cop killing as a side hobby. When these paths cross, a horror show of violence unfolds as they all slide into a hell of their own design, surrounded by the neon and noise of the casino strip on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Violent, vivid, life at hyper-speed.
How can a woman with no arms or legs be at the center of all this mayhem? Read and find out. Other reviewers have called for a this to be made into a movie and I can only agree. This has enough suspense, mystery and guns to be a Tarantino film.

It is an intense story from start to finish. It peels back the curtain into the hearts of the foulest criminals. These people do awful terrible things that will disgust and repel you. You will ask yourself, "can people trully be that evil?"

The only answer is yes. And people who live these kind of violent lives can hope for a happy ending. But we all know that's not going to happen. But that doesn't stop them from trying and nothing is going to stop you from reading to the bitter end.

You will be shocked and saddened but glad you read it.

Review - Super Zombie Juice Mega Bomb by MJ A Ware @MJAWare

Super Zombie Juice Mega Bomb by MJ A Ware

Super Zombie Juice Mega Bomb is a horror novel for young adults. The author offers this synopsis:
After a failed attempt at running away, best friends Nathan and Misty return home expecting to face angry parents. Instead, they discover the military has destroyed the bridges out of their rural town and everyone's fled—except a small horde of the living dead. The stress of flesh-eating zombies may be more than their already strained relationship can handle.
Even with the help of the town geek and lemonade-powered Super-Soakers, there's not enough time to squeeze their way out of this sticky mess. Unless the trio eradicates the zombie infestation, while avoiding the deadly zombie snot, the military will blow the town, and them, to pulp.
Yes, the title is long and a little over the top. But it fits the story, it's a zombie book after all. It's a YA novel and it is very respectful to young people's sensibilities. No cursing or strong language and no explicit gore or violence. I didn't miss a thing with it having safe language. It does have elements of good story. I am glad that wasn't missing.

Ware follows the basic zombie story formula. No surprises. A lot of running and evading and zombie killing. The characters are interesting to read. The twist in this story is that the characters need to rid the town of the zombies or escape, or the military will rid them all, zombie or not. That's a lot of pressure. The twist becomes even twistier when they discover that a change in pH will destroy the zombies. That's an easy thing to do one on one but you need a Super Zombie Juice Mega Bomb to cleanse a whole town.

It's a quick and easy read. The name and the plot is enough of a reason to give it a chance if zombie stories are what you enjoy.

The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore

The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore from Moonbot Studios on Vimeo.

Inspired, in equal measures, by Hurricane Katrina, Buster Keaton, The Wizard of Oz, and a love for books, “Morris Lessmore” is a story of people who devote their lives to books and books who return the favor. Morris Lessmore is a poignant, humorous allegory about the curative powers of story. Using a variety of techniques (miniatures, computer animation, 2D animation) award winning author/ illustrator William Joyce and Co-director Brandon Oldenburg present a new narrative experience that harkens back to silent films and M-G-M Technicolor musicals. “Morris Lessmore” is old fashioned and cutting edge at the same time.

“The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore” is one of five animated short films that will be considered for outstanding film achievements of 2011 in the 84th Academy Awards ®.

Threat (The Barren Spheres Trilogy) by David R. Koff

Threat (The Barren Spheres Trilogy)
The declaration of war was delivered just before darkfall. Prepare to be invaded. Winkon’s breath caught in his throatstem at the document’s audacity. Our food sources are disappearing. And ours are not? thought Winkon. Our offspring shrivel from lack of nourishment. Yes, and ours also. How will sending the parents of your offspring into another Sphere, ours, to die while killing the parents of our offspring—address the Threat? If you wish to capitulate in advance…. This time it wasn’t a thought, but a response, reverberating through Winkon’s whole being. Never. Never. Never. * * * An eight-eyed Hitler. A ten-legged espionage agent. A carapaced Queen. An intelligence-gathering avian courier service. A resistance fighter able to blur herself into invisibility. Sibling survivors of The Mist. These vibrant, dimensional characters and many more come together, and burst apart, in Threat. It’s a war of the worlds, in a time of diminishing resources, incomprehensible plagues, apocalyptic catastrophes, and tremors of extinction. Is it our world? Yes; no. Threat is familiar, casting a storyteller’s timeless, irresistible net (courage, betrayal; humor, fear, hope; a hostile, take-no-prisoners political climate and a desperate diplomatic search for peace). Yet Threat is startlingly new. The ground it breaks is right below our feet, where the main characters reside. There, on a fine, thin thread already fraying, the future hangs in the balance. Must it be the terrifying one, whose limits are already in evidence? Or is there another, more hopeful possibility? In 350 pages, Threat shows us the biggest picture there is, writ deep and small, microscopically so. With elements of science-fantasy, speculative fiction and political thriller, filled with brilliant characters, and non-stop, cliff-hanger action, told in language reminiscent of A Clockwork Orange’s inventiveness, Threat will provoke, satisfy, and enthrall readers.
