Dark Clouds by Phil Rowan @WriterRowan

Dark Clouds

Dark Clouds centres on al-Qaeda terrorists who hope to cause nuclear mayhem in London. The main character, Flynn, enjoys a drink and is empathetic with friendly females ... but is he really up for tackling dangerous Islamic jihadists – people that see Westerners as misguided infidels who need to experience the purifying wrath of Allah?

The bad guys want to irradiate 'decadent' Brits, who are perceived as enemies of Allah. It is scary, but a US/UK Security Service team believe that Rudi Flynn can help them avert disaster. His Muslim American girlfriend, Faria, fell with the North Tower in New York on 9/11 and he is now working as a journalist in London. He is trying to forget what happened in Manhattan on that fateful Tuesday, but he still has some Islamic contacts. One of whom, Rashid, is in the loop with jihadists and wants to cross over.

Flynn is wary about going undercover, but an oil rich Syrian he knows is suspected of funding the bad guys. On the up side, he has just met Ingrid – an artist who invites him to join her on a Greek island where he can write about a fiery Fenian ancestor. This won’t happen, however, unless he delivers for Carla Hirsch: his ice cold and very focused US Homeland Security controller.

5 Things You Need Say in Your Book Trailer

I've seen a few book trailers since starting this blog. Surprisingly not many on this blog. I've seen them just about everywhere else: Youtube, Goodreads, author websites, trailer websites. There is a huge curve as far quality. I've found some trailers that are extremely well produced and others not so much. But even the videos of the lowest quality got the job done. They told me what I wanted to know.

1) Who wrote it.
2) What's it about. (genre, synopsis)
3) Where can I buy it.
4) Why should I care. (what are other people saying about it)
5) How can I find out more. (websites)

The trailer doesn't have to cost thousands of dollars and made by a film school graduate. It helps, but it doesn't have to be. Just take care in producing it. Please let it look like you care and you spent some time doing it. It you can make a PPt presentation, I would say you are half way there. Yes, it's a different kind of software but the general idea is the same. I would recommend using your book cover as a template for the whole production. You really want readers to associate that video with your book.

I put this one together as a case in point. I have some experience, so it wasn't that hard for me. But it gives you the general idea of what I'm trying to say. Just jump in there and go for it and if you can't do it yourself, then find someone who can. There are companies that specialize in book trailers and there are websites that will help you build one from scratch.

The best part is the software you need is probably already on your computer and the Internet is filled with free media to help build your book trailer. Just check to be sure it is royalty free or is a creative commons attribution share alike license to be safe.

I hope you dig in there and go for it. If you already have a trailer, please post a link to it in the comments. If you need some help, contact me at thedigitalinkspot {at} gmail {dot} com.

Fathoms of Forgiveness by Nadia Scrieva @NadiaScrieva

Fathoms of Forgiveness (Sacred Breath, #2)

There is no divorce in the undersea kingdom of Adlivun. Marriage is a bond that lasts until death—even if death comes in several centuries, and in that time your spouse happens to become your sworn enemy. This is the conflict that General Visola Ramaris faces when she learns that the mighty Vachlan is behind the attacks on her kingdom. She has sworn to protect Adlivun with her life, but long ago, she also swore to love and honor her husband...
Visola must choose whether she will destroy Vachlan once and for all, or attempt the hardest thing conceivable: communication. After two hundred years of desertion, she has no faith in their feeble bond and knows she can never forgive him. When he threatens the person dearest to her, she must take action. Confronting Vachlan on enemy territory would be nothing short of suicide. She knows that if she falls into his custody, the deranged man would relish breaking her down and making her lose her sanity.
Princess Aazuria forbids Visola from taking matters into her own hands; she will do anything it takes to protect her friend from the man who wants to crush her. Alas, Visola is a crazy, uncontrollable warrior woman with the blood of Vikings in her veins. Why would she ever consider doing the safe and predictable thing?

Overrun: Project Hideaway by Michael Rusch ‏ @ReadOverrun

Overrun: Project Hideaway

The Overrun story continues…

A week following the declaration of war, the U.S. is close to defeat. A failed genocide attempt becomes known to the public and the President must answer to the world for his administration’s sins.

An element still exists that could bring victory to the battered U.S. forces and ease the tensions of a quickly dividing country. On the ship Hideaway, technology to create an artificial ozone floats secretly hidden away in space untouched by the conflict being waged on Earth.

The President launches a covert retrieval mission led by one of his top most-involved generals in the war. The J.G.U as well as separate mercenary forces race to do the same. The quest to obtain the prized technology becomes a final battle for victory in the war as well as an ultimate determination of survival of the planet.

Aboard the Hideaway, a two-man crew is inexplicably awakened from a fifty-year hypersleep without communication from those that launched their mission well before the onset of war. With unidentified ships approaching in the distance, they prepare to forcibly defend their cargo not knowing their actions will decide the fate of the world they float above.

Review - The Tree of Everlasting Knowledge by Christine Nolfi @christinenolfi

The Tree of Everlasting Knowledge
by Christine Nolfi

The author has this synopsis to offer:

A savage rape on hallowed ground. Secrets buried for decades by the town’s most influential family.

Now Ourania D’Andre will learn the Great Oak’s secrets as construction begins at the Fagan mansion. She can’t afford to turn down a job that promises to stir up the long-buried guilt—and the passion—she shares with powerful Troy Fagan.

She’s already juggling the most important job of her career with her new responsibilities as a foster mother for young Walt and Emma Korchek. And there’s a hard, older man on the construction crew with eyes void of emotion—cold and killing. The secrets of his brutal past will pose a grave threat to the children in her care. Will she find the courage to face him?
Everything told in this book stems from the "Great Oak". I was curious about what that could be and Nolfi delivers. This novels is an intricate web of back story that only supports and broadens the entire main story and sub plots. I love it when an author takes the time to create a story where every detail is important and every branch of sub plot is allowed to take its own course and naturally finds its way back to the main story. Nolfi beautifully pulling it all together.

This is what great story telling is all about. I loved the characters and their stories and how they are all intertwined for the benefit of the reader. The main characters of Ourania and Troy have a love/hate relationship that pushed the story forward. In a comical and heart breaking way. Their regret and anger for each other pushed them apart but not for long, circumstances bring them together again and they must decided how their relationship will continue.

The core story line is a quest to find the truth, to find the knowledge about the past. They swear to one another that knowledge and truth are what they value. But when they are faced with the option to either be open or not,  they find out that some decisions aren't so easy.

I really liked the book. The climatic chase and rescue was done well. It is well crafted story. The mystery of the "Great Oak" is incrementally revealed until you are allowed to see the whole picture. I had an idea in my own head what the truth was and I was pleasantly surprised by the ending. Nolfi is a wonderful storyteller.

Leiyatel's Embrace by Clive S. Johnson @Clive_SJohnson

Leiyatel's Embrace

A finely wrought and exquisitely detailed Speculative Fiction Mystery set at the end of a castle kingdom's epoch long history. The arrival of a strange army at the gates marks the end of an era and the unravelling of a mystery. At its heart is Leiyatel – the Living Green Stone Tree - long the preserver of the realm of Dica. What is to be her fate and those who depend upon her?

A highly original and intricately imagined world, the ancient castle kingdom of Dica has slowly declined to a somnolent shadow of its illustrious past but changes are in the wind, heralded by the sudden arrival of a mysterious army.

A complex tale unfolds as Lord Nephril, Dica’s Master of Ceremonies, and his oddly assorted companions strive to uncover not only who is then arrayed at their gates, but how their realm might be restored. What comes to light is a multi-layered fabric of interwoven interests and conflicts, an absorbing rebirth of ancient myth and legend, as alive and immediate now as in its dim and distant past.

At its heart is Leiyatel – the Living Green Stone Tree – preserver of the realm’s fortune and wondrous creation of the ancient Engers of Bazarral. What is to be her own fortune, though, and in whose hands will it finally rest? How will the disparate interests of Dican royalty, of Galgaverre’s Guardian, of the ancient Bazarran Stewards and of Leiyatel herself play out within Nature’s own domain?

The story culminates in a fascinating climax and deeply satisfying conclusion that will particularly appeal to those who like a rich and involving read.

Readers who enjoy this story may like to know that the author’s next work is coming soon. ‘Of Weft and Weave’ is equally original, set in the same world and, strangely enough, at the same time and with most of the same characters.

THE GREATEST short STORY [ies] [I've] EVER TOLD by Jay Squires @jay_squires

THE GREATEST short STORY [ies] [I've] EVER TOLD

DARK REFLECTIONS: Lena loves Robin in that special way a mother loves her child. Only, Robin is her husband! Lena also has feelings for Maretta, who happens to be Robins's sister and the matchmaker who brought them together. Maretta seems to feel the same. But how could anything come of it ... at least while Robin's dying?

WHAT A HUNDRED'LL Do: Are these the rants, ramblings and actions of a demented man? Or are they the net result of love carrying him as far as it can go?

KEEPING SCORE: Competition means nothing unless a score is kept -- even when the competitors are 100-plus years-old! On this field the battle can be brutal. Ask 114 year-old Graham Murdoch, listed as the oldest person in the U.S. (but only 3rd on the world-scale)! Or ask his ruthless opponent, in the other corner (so to speak!) at 113, Foster Carmichael. Foster Carmichael craves to be number one. Need more be said?

BENT: Is Johnny Dead or Alive? He was sure he knew once. Or is Johnny merely dreaming he is dead or alive? There have been some bizarre cognitive encounters. He may have been part of them. Perhaps his shrink knows. Unless he is a shard from his shrink's shattered delusions. Why aren't things as simple as when he was a child? At times he remembers his childhood.

Willow Pond by Carol Tibaldi @cat5149

Willow Pond

The Roaring Twenties crumble into the Great Depression, but Virginia Kingsley, New York's toughest and most successful speakeasy owner, is doing just fine. Now that the world is falling apart, bootlegging is a flourishing business, and she's queen of that castle.

Then her infant nephew is kidnapped. Her niece, Laura, and Laura's philandering movie star husband, are devastated. The police have few leads, and speculation and rumors abound in the media circus that follows the celebrity abduction.

Only one reporter, Erich Muller, seems to care enough about the child's welfare and the parents' feelings to report the case responsibly. Over the course of the investigation, Erich Muller and Laura fall in love, but their relationship is doomed to failure since he suspects her beloved aunt Virginia is behind the kidnapping. Laura, jaded when it comes to men, sides with Virginia.
But Virginia has figured out the truth, and she can't tell anyone for fear of losing her niece's affections and having the police ransack her life. So she pursues her own investigation, shaking down, threatening, and killing one petty crook after another during her search.

Little Todd's absence shapes everyone's lives. When he is finally found, the discovery will bring disaster for some and revelation for others.

Beautiful art is the last thing that these friends are worried about, though, when their friend Keisha flees her abusive husband after years of covering for him and comes to her friends for help. Keisha's husband is hot on her track and all three friends soon find themselves facing down the abuser. Their only choice is to protect each other and to try to put a stop to his behavior once and for all. Review - No One Can Do Anything Worse To You Than You Can by Sam Pink

No One Can Do Anything Worse to You Than You Can

The author offer this synopsis:

Why is it that we're always afraid of our ankles getting grabbed by a hand coming out of the gutter? And why will our lives be completely fulfilled when we look down one day and notice we're wearing underwear made out of a brown paper bag?
Thankfully, you don't have to think about any of that because in his second collection of poetry, Sam Pink has done the work for you.
You will see a crowd of people in your head and the crowd will point at you and say, "Ewww." You will hang yourself from the ceiling with a hook though your bottom jaw. You will feel at home eating your own heart off a commemorative plate featuring a picture of your corpse.
You won't learn anything except that, "No one can do anything to you that's worse than what you're already thought to yourself. No one can do anything worse to you than the things you've already done. No one can do anything worse to you than you can."

This is a collection of four long poems: The Midwest, You Hear Ambulance Sounds and Think They Are For You, Human Beings Are Toys and A Shield Made of Napkins.

I see them as incredible pieces of literature or a turned out bag of mess. For me it's really hard to distinguish. There are some moments in the four pieces I can ease back and emphatically pump my fist in agreement and congratulations of Sam Pink's genius. Then there are moments where I wonder if I had just happened upon a public release of Pink's bizarre and wickedly filthy stream of consciousness. Some of this stuff is out there, man. It's as if Pink has forsaken his quest to convey any meaning or structure. I am assuming that is Pink's goal in the first place. He might be laughing at us all for praising him for his works and all along he knows it is a pile of sick.

But that alone is what attracts me to the bizarro literary world where Sam Pink is a resident. It challenges the rules of society and its norms, morals and even its prejudices. It's an interesting and challenging book of poetry.

In The Shadow of Death by Jeremy Bowen‏ @JeremyPBowen

In The Shadow of Death (Shadow Series)

"He sat on the cliff edge and watched the water smash against the rocks many metres below. It was alive; the sea, continuously pounding like a life giving heart, breaking into huge plumes of spray which erupted between the rocks. Each beat threw up a light mist to dance with the sunbeams and create, in one glorious place, a faint rainbow.

As he sat, he wept. He did not weep for lost love. Nor did he weep for the toils and pains of the life which showed in the creases of his leathered face. Nor indeed did he weep for his loneliness, as intense as it was, or for absent family or friends, or those missing smiles and comforts that loved ones brought. He did not weep for any of those things."

A man with nothing. In a place that is not his own. Thrown into a world of violence and death, desperate to clear the shadows from his memories and remember who he is. Then comes a stranger, but she is not like the others. She promises him the truth, and as the shocking secrets of his past start to unwind he returns to where it all began, a place where he played God. Here, the full horror of what he did is revealed.

This is the first book in the Shadow series.

A great value read at over 100,000 words. Please follow the author on Twitter, he loves to interact and will always reply. @JeremyPBowen

Monster Vice by George P Saunders @gpsaunders30

Monster Vice

The time is tomorrow. A meteor storm has allowed monsters of every order to run free across the planet. Vampires, werewolves, ghosts, demons and other atrocities are the new bad guys on the block. To contend with this prevalent threat, various law enforcement agencies have created special divisions to deal with the monster epidemic. LAPD has created Monster Vice, and its senior cop is Dick Pitts -- a specialist in monster extermination. On a daily basis, Pitts stakes vampires, executes werewolves, and exorcises demons. When his partner is killed, he is assigned a new partner named Curadel -- who is in fact Dracula -- a greatly misunderstood Dracula through the ages and a Dracula who has become a cop to help humanity deal with the vampire plague. Now, Pitts and Dracula must team up and fight a Grand Master - the most powerful vampire in the world - who is hell bent on transforming every child in Los Angeles into a bloodsucking killing machine. Pitts and Dracula create a special platoon of 'fang warriors' -- their mission: to find the Grand Master and shut down his evil plans before the streets of LA are flooded in a sea of blood.
