Coming Home by April Plummer ‏ @April_Plummer

Coming Home

For years, eighteen-year old Isabela Fuentes worked two jobs to support her promiscuous, alcoholic mother. After the latest boyfriend rapes her at knife point, Isabela throws her few possessions into her car and drives until she reaches Lakeside, Montana, twenty-five hundred miles from New York City’s suffocating smog. As her bodily scars fade, she takes solace in the nature around her and records it in her sketch pad. It isn't until she begins sketching scenes from her rape that she learns to cope with what happened. But leaving her mother behind to fend for herself might have been a mistake; and when two strangers appear on her doorstep claiming to be her dead grandparents, they threaten the fragile childhood memories. Before she can rebuild her life, Isabela must decide to either let her past go or unite it with the woman she’s become.

Interview with Laura A. H. Elliott @Laurawriting

The Digital Ink Spot interviewed the author, Laura Elliott. She writes that Avenal is a "little-known town" but I am proud to say that I know about it. I live in the San Joaquin Valley and often heard of this little town just west of me. Laura loves writing about enchanted road trips, birthday gifts that are out of this world, and alien romance while eating lots of popcorn. She’s the author of Winnemucca, a small-town fairy tale inspired by her life-long love of a little-known town, Avenal, CA, and her equal love of enchanted teenage road trips. 13 on Halloween is the first book in the Teen Halloween Series. 14 on Halloween, book 2 in the Teen Halloween series, will be released in the summer of 2012. Transfer Student, a sci-fi romance-adventure, will release for Amazon and Barnes & Noble on March 20th.
To find out where in the world Laura is and more about her upcoming books, visit her blog Laurasmagicday,
and friend her on Facebook. If Twitter is your thing she's @Laurawriting. Or, drop her a line at elliwrite [at] yahoo [dot] com.

The Digital Ink Spot: What makes you love Avenal, CA so much?
Laura Elliott:
My husband is from Avenal and his family still lives there. I’ve known Avenal for over twenty-five years and love the people and the history of the town. There’s such a beauty to the hills outside of Avenal and to the way everyone knows each other. I have many special memories there. Some of my favorite times have been over Old Timers’ Day, or on the 4th of July and also at the Sand Drags. There’s a scene in Winnemucca at the Sand Drags. Tar Canyon is just outside Avenal and is where the San Andreas Fault is very visible. “The backbones of the earth” jut out of the ground. To stand there is simply electric. There is a scene in the book in Tar Canyon also. There are many more reasons why I love Avenal but the last one I’ll leave you with is the sight of an abandoned oil derrick decorated with Christmas lights at Christmastime. I’ve always loved the sight of that derrick. Avenal is a very special place as are the people who live there.

The Digital Ink Spot: What success have you had going independent?
Laura Elliott: I’ve had the great good fortune to meet incredible writers and go on tours with them. This is fabulous because we get to talk to our readers. I published my first novel last June and since then I’ve had the opportunity to tour in Portland, OR; Savannah, GA; Deltona, FL and Clearwater, FL. I’m part of a group of authors called The Paranormal Plumes Society and also the Pacific Northwest YA Authors. I also run the YA Indie Carnival. This has helped get the word out about my stories. I feel successful when I get emails from fans that enjoy reading my stories and ask me questions about them. It’s wonderful to be able to talk to readers in person too. I love library visits and school visits as well as shows like WordStock, which I had the opportunity to attend. The whole process has been a thrill. I even got to be on TV for the very first time! It’s been so much fun going Indie.

The Digital Ink Spot: What can your fans always count on from you in your writing?
Laura Elliott: My fans can count on unique and unexpected stories––enchanted road trips, birthday gifts that are out of this world, alien romance. I enjoy one-foot in reality stories that test the boundaries of my characters’ and readers’ expectations for their lives and also for the way a story is told. My dream is to write characters that live off the page long after the reader has read the last word. The most flattering reader comments that I’ve ever received include ones that tell me they have never read a story like the one I’ve written.

The Digital Ink Spot: I think your book covers are very eye-catching. Did you design or help design them yourself?
Laura Elliott: Thanks so much. That makes my day. I design all of my book covers. This is my latest book cover for Transfer Student. I’ve been a graphic/multimedia designer for over twenty-five years so design is part of what I love to do. I also produce my own book trailers. You can find them on my blog, Laurasmagicday

I have a lot to learn about designing covers though. My experience is in the entertainment industry where I worked at E! Entertainment Television and The Los Angeles Times.
Here’s a little story about the cover for Winnemucca.
The background photo was taken by my hubby Joe.   The background image of the cover is a photo of Highway 33 where we meet Ginny, a seventeen-year-old girl who is just beginning her enchanted road trip to her true self. One foot in front of the other, her walk will take her to the state prison just outside of town. You see a glimpse of the prison on the right hand side of the cover, complete with barbed wire fences and a guard tower. I really wanted a picture of the Avenal State Prison sign too because it is there at the sign that Ginny becomes “A Child of The Road.” After my husband took this photo he drove further up the road and when he took a few pictures of the sign, he was swarmed with sheriffs. They asked him what he was doing. I wish I could have heard the convo. In my head it goes something like this: My wife wrote a book and the main character takes an enchanted road trip…Um. Our bad. Note to self: can’t take pictures of prisons. The sheriffs were nice enough but deleted a bunch of photos on my husband’s camera. I’m super-happy that they didn’t arrest him and even happier that they didn’t delete this photo, one of two I used to make the cover. And no, those aren’t my legs, but I get that question all the time. I photoshopped them in.

The Digital Ink Spot: What can readers expect from you in 2012?
Laura Elliott: I’m very excited about my new release
                                           TRANSFER STUDENT.
Two Worlds––Two Teens––One Wish
Geek Rhoe and Surfer Ashley would never be friends.
Even if they lived on the same planet.
But, they’ll become much more.
They’ll transfer.
The blog tour starts on 2/29 Leap Day and runs until it’s release 3/20. It’s a science-fiction romance/adventure story about how Rhoe, a boy geek alien, swaps lives with Ashley, a Beverly Hills surfer, when his teleporting telescope experiment goes wrong. They have to survive life as their biggest nightmare to discover their dreams. It’s a love letter to teens everywhere who struggle with peer pressure, friendship and fitting in…no matter what planet they call home. Hope you all can join in the fun. There will be weekly and daily giveaways. For more info click here.
14 ON HALLOWEEN, Book 2 in the TEEN HALLOWEEN SERIES will release this summer. I love Roxie, the main character. 14 on Halloween is a continuation of her story and about her understanding her new, growing powers of astral projection. She’s older this year and in high school. Last year she wanted to be popular. This year she just wants to fit in. But that’s turning out to be impossible.

Everything I Tell You is a Lie by Fingers Murphy ‏ @fingers_murphy

Everything I Tell You is a Lie (a novella)
FINALIST for Spinetingler Magazine's Best Novella of 2011 Award

Praise for Fingers Murphy:
Fingers Murphy was recently named one of the Top 3 Indie Crime Authors by Crime Fiction Utopia.
Readers and reviewers call his work "poetic" "literate" "fast-paced and suspenseful" and "as good as it gets."
New York Times Bestselling author Debbi Mack wrote of his debut legal thriller: "Move over John Grisham!"

Now Fingers Murphy pushes his work in a new direction with this deceptively simple novella that explores the basic question: what drives someone to kill?
The answer, like life itself, is never as simple as it seems. As a prison psychologist and his young patient peel back layers of violence, abuse, mistrust, and missed opportunities, we see a family imploding on itself and the sometimes disastrous effect parental decisions have on children.

Killers aren't born, they're made.

This 30,000 word novella will keep you up late to finish it in one sitting, and it will stick with you long after you put it down.

Fingers Murphy is the pen name of a well-known international criminal defense attorney.

Review - Ginnie Dare: Crimson Sands by Scott Roche @spiritualtramp

Ginnie Dare: Crimson Sands by Scott Roche (@spiritualtramp)

The author offers this synopsis of the book:

Ginnie Dare is the communications officer for her family’s space faring shipping company. They arrive at Eshu for a routine supply drop and discover that the entire settlement’s population has vanished. Their search of the site reveals nothing out of place, except the people, but ends in a tense confrontation with the natives. During the conflict, Ginnie discovers an alien artifact that may be the key to diffusing the conflict. Can she decode the artifact before it’s taken by the Sector Defense Force? Will it help them to discover the missing colony’s fate? Or, will the whole thing spark an interstellar war?

This is a likable book for any pre-teen to young adult. The entire story reminds me of an old Star Trek: Next Generation episode with a young Mr. Crusher. In this case, it's a young Ms. Dare. I liked the concept then, I like it now. She saves the day while all the brave and all knowing adults run around chasing their tail.

I really liked what the artifact did.  It was very cool idea. Mr. Roche brings these kind of nuggets to the table for readers to explore and appreciate. He's done this in past stories and I expect more of the same in the future. My only argument with Mr. Roche that he tends to take his time to get the party started. Once the party does start, Mr. Roche fires on all cylinders. I have read previous stories by Mr. Roche an I have gotten use to his style and I've come to accept it. New readers may rightfully be turned off by this style. They will be missing out if they do.

Young readers will definitely like the book.

Review - The Opening by Ron Savarese @findtheopening

The Opening by Ron Savarese

The author offers this synopsis of the book:

The Opening addresses the age-old question 'what happens when we die?' with a spiritual fantasy of immense charm and imagination. At once an insightful meditation on life’s passages and a vision of unearthly realms, it creates its own enchanted worlds where characters connect with one another between here and the hereafter across the thinnest of lines.
Joe St. John wanders out into a blizzard and falls through an opening that leads him to amazing, sometimes harrowing places where he encounters the major turning points in his life. Along the way, he revisits his missed opportunities, uncovers his life’s core trauma, and is given mysterious geometrical symbols that hold the key to his future.
As Joe's soul hovers between two worlds he will discover the truth about life and death, and be confronted with the ultimate choice: save his own life, or give it up for someone he loves.
A sparkling, hallucinatory, fast-paced read with unexpected twists of plot, imbued with a childlike sense of wonder. You’ll love floating in the book’s magical dreamscape, and may find yourself wanting to read it again and again to uncover its mystical insights and layers of meaning.
Joe St. John is dying in an ice cave. As he slowly fades away, his past comes to haunt him.

I think this story is as much as about the main character, Joe St. John's, decisions as it is about the character's cousin, Albert. I made the mistake of ignoring Albert. It was easy to do. Albert is portrayed as someone to be ignored. I read the book and was intrigued by a laundry list of missed opportunities by Joe through out his life. Joe made a lot of bad decisions like we all have but Joe is afforded an opportunity to look back and see the weight of his words and choices.

Through Joe reflections we see Albert there, woven in like a thread in a seemingly random fashion. It's not. Savarese constructed a tale with purpose and forethought. The character, Joe, is bombarded with regret and remorse until the final pages where he seeks the ultimate redemption. Lo and behold, Albert returns to the story and ties the entire reason for Joe's trip into the past into a perfect, neat and beautiful bow and presented to me for my approval. Approve, I do. My mind was blown.

I really liked this book. I liked how every word had value and was wonderfully cashed in at the very end as beautiful literary treasure.

Review - Older Man Younger Man: A Love Story by Joseph Dispenza @DispenzaJ

Older Man Younger Man: A Love Story by Joseph Dispenza

The author offers this synopsis of the book:

Older Man/Younger Man is a memoir of the relationship between a middle-aged man and a man thirty years his junior, from their first meeting, through the challenges of living together across a wide age-gap, to a climactic confession of shame and regret, the terror of loss from a life-threatening disease - and, ultimately, the triumph of love.
This is a passionate, bittersweet story of a powerful love that transcends gender, bridges generations, defies convention, and brings to the partners the richness of spiritual fulfillment. The relationship between an older man and a younger man is one of the last taboos left in our culture's sexual closet. Older Man/Younger Man is the first book to address an inter-generational gay male relationship as a path of spiritual redemption. What makes this book unique and special is its presentation of the pairing between an older man and a much younger man as a healthy, successful relationship and as a spiritual journey.

This book is a memoir. This is one man's story from his point of view. A unique personal view. This story transcends time and space and gender. Dispenza does shares points in his life that are unique for a gay man but most of this story is a universal love story. Dispenza vividly recalls his life's ups and downs and records them for us to read and experience right along with him. Though I might not have the same story, I can relate to many of the same fears and tribulations Dispenza shared.

Older Man/Younger Man is a very well written tale. From the start of his story, Dispenza offers a vision of Pan in the forest. In my mind, I feel Dispenza relates to Pan as a gruff creature forever chasing youth and beauty. In Dispenza's final words, he again returns to the image of Pan in the forest as a god among many as the world is reborn. Dispenza's words are well planned and powerful. His allusions to others works, other times and other gods are amazing. Dispenza is a very talented writer.

Older Man/Younger Man a beautiful story of love overcoming a myriad of taboos. He himself eventually overcomes an innate shame that trails him from the very beginning of his life. This is a story about victory, love and finding peace.

The Delphi Chronicle, Book 1 - The Manuscript by Russell Blake @BlakeBooks

The Delphi Chronicle, Book 1 - The Manuscript

The Delphi Chronicle is a serial trilogy - a story that unfolds over three installments. This first book, The Manuscript, chronicles the saga of NY private eye Michael Derrigan, as he unwittingly comes into possession of a manuscript that will change the world order if its secrets are aired. Clandestine factions of the U.S. government will do anything to keep the story buried, and a trail of butchery follows Derrigan as he races for his life in a chase that takes him from New York, to Mexico, to Havana. An epic roller-coaster ride of a thriller, The Delphi Chronicle's unflinching and often disturbing twists and turns question the nature of reality and of the integrity of our governments in a post-modern world of lies, deceit and betrayal.

City of Hell Chronicles: Volume 1

Victoria Griesdoorn
, Belinda Frisch , Colin F. Barnes , Ren Warom , Anne Michaud , Amy L. Overley , Kendall Grey

There is no god, no saviour.

Mankind is without salvation and on the cusp of total annihilation.

During an eruption at Yellowstone, the Great Maurr, an ancient god, rose from the bowels of the earth and brought a bug apocalypse with him.

Swarms of giant ants, centipedes and diabolical hybrids swept the planet consuming the animal kingdom and destroying human civilisation in a matter of weeks. Nothing could stop their relentless genocide.

Just a few cities remain; a handful of human survivors in London, Moscow and Hong Kong scuttle about in the darkness forever fearful of being caught, eaten by the solider ants, or worse: made to breed in the City of Hell to produce hideous hybrid creatures.

Can these last remaining humans find a way of surviving and ultimately fight back in this nightmarish dystopia?

Combining the other-worldly weirdness of H.P. Lovecraft and the frightening imagery of Clive Barker, this anthology is brought to you buy 7 international writers from the UK, Canada and USA as they chronicle the horrifying consequences of a new world bug order.

Dare you enter the City of Hell?

Georgiana Darcy's Diary: Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice continued (Pride and Prejudice Chronicles)
Mr. Darcy's younger sister searches for her own happily-ever-after...

The year is 1814, and it's springtime at Pemberley. Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy have married. But now a new romance is in the air, along with high fashion, elegant manners, scandal, deception, and the wonderful hope of a true and lasting love.

Shy Georgiana Darcy has been content to remain unmarried, living with her brother and his new bride. But Elizabeth and Darcy's fairy-tale love reminds Georgiana daily that she has found no true love of her own. And perhaps never will, for she is convinced the one man she secretly cares for will never love her in return. Georgiana's domineering aunt, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, has determined that Georgiana shall marry, and has a list of eligible bachelors in mind. But which of the suitors are sincere, and which are merely interested in Georgiana's fortune? Georgiana must learn to trust her heart--and rely on her courage, for she also faces the return of the man who could ruin her reputation and spoil a happy ending, just when it finally lies within her grasp.

Georgiana Darcy's Diary is Book 1 of the Pride and Prejudice Chronicles and is approximately 67,000 words in length.

River in the Sea by Tina Boscha @TinaBoscha

River in the Sea
When a German soldier's dog bolts in front of Leen's truck, in a fraction of a second, she must make a choice: brake hard, or hit the gas.

She floors it.

What happens next sets off a chain of events that pitches Leen, just 15, and her family against the German forces when they are most desperate - and fierce. Leen tries to hold her family together, but despite her efforts, bit by bit everything falls apart.

And just when Leen experiences a horrific loss, she must make a decision that could forever brand her a traitor, yet finally allow her to live as her heart desires.

Readers who want to immerse themselves in a story with both a plot and characters that keep the pages turning will love River in the Sea.

For fans of The Book Thief, Those Who Save Us, and Sarah's Key.

Inspired by events experienced by the author's mother, River in the Sea is a powerfully moving account of one girl reaching adulthood when everything she believes about family, friendship, and loyalty is questioned by war.

Stepping Forward By Paul Carroll @writeranonymous

 Stepping Forward by Paul Carroll

On August 25th 2010, Carl Doyle vanished into thin air right in front of his friends.

Since he left, Alan Darcy has had to put up with the public interest. Life goes on, changed forever. People blame him for Carl disappearing: friends, the media, the authorities. The first chance he gets, he flees the country.

Over a year later, Carl returns as mysteriously as he disappeared. With no recollection of where he's been, who he is or why he left, he can only wait for Alan to come back home, and attempt to remember his life before stepping forward in time.
