Review - Sold by Elena Davinski

Life is rarely fair. Such an idea is for children, those who haven’t experienced enough of the real world to know what struggle is life. I could say it wasn’t fair that my father was in debt. I could say it wasn’t fair that I was the one that stepped up to deal with the consequences. What would it matter, really, when at the end of the day I still ended up in the arms and bed of Nero Adams, the man to whom I sold my body so that my father could have a chance to live? Fairness didn’t come into play in such situations like this. The only thing you could worry about was whether or not you’d survive knowing you ended up falling in love with the man who might get you killed.

Review - I picked this up for two reasons. One, it was free for a limited time. Two, I saw this cover I had to know what the heck is going on. This cover has little to do with the initial story. The book has many, many bonus stories. Maybe they have more to do with the cover.

The primary story, Sold, is pure fantasy writing. Not the mythical creature kind of fantasy but the love story where nothing goes wrong with a happily ever after ending. Characters are completely one dimensional despite their inner dialogue for more from this so called life. The story is produced for reader escapism. For that purpose it gets an A plus.

Review - Sixth Prime by Dan O'Brien @AuthorDanOBrien

On the other side of the galaxy an eccentric artist, Ale Euclid, on the cusp of real success seemingly jumps to his death, beginning an investigation that will unravel a connection between 16 individuals scattered across the stars. C. Gideon Jane, investigator for the Sluga Mining Trust, has been called in to discover what really happened. While investigating, he crosses paths with Moira Cossima, a mysterious friend of Ale Euclid, whose insight leads him deeper into a sprawling conspiracy.

Meanwhile, treasure hunters J’quar and Fei are hot on the trail of an artifact called the Pondus at the behest of the Sluga Mining Trust. Trapped aboard a mining tower on Quartus, twins Leda and Lorelei must face down strange creatures and a monster that dwells deep within the ice floes of the red planet. Not far from the two sisters, a wrongfully accused inmate is haunted by what he has done, and what he has been asked to do.

An attack on the Dimidium-Bet waystation in neutral space by Grand Admiral Leahy of the Sovereignty tests an already shaky relationship between the two warring societies. Blaise Centauri, admiral of the Commonwealth fleet, and Nom Chatar, his second, arrive in time to save some refugees from the station, including Bar Thiel, a relief worker and doctor aboard the destroyed station.

Even though they begin worlds apart from one another, the universe has set them upon a collision course with one another…

Disclosure - I was provided free of charge by the Author a copy of the eBook.

Review - Books like these are a massive undertaking to write and to read. There are so many characters interacting within their story arc. O'Brien explores a self created galaxy of worlds, creatures and characters and does a excellent job weaving it all together.

What is interesting is the concept of Prime. Who is a Prime and what does it mean. Most importantly, what does Prime mean to The Darkness and The Devourer. On top of it all, intergalactic war is not out of the question. To say there is a lot going on is an understatement.

This is step one in a long foreseeable journey into Dan O'Brien's universe. Take the risk and follow where this story goes.

Review - Dark Ride by P.G. Kassel @PGKassel

Some criminals have all the luck, but Marty’s is about to run out…
Marty Wedlow needs one last score before he can skip town. It’s only a matter of time before two thugs he swindled point a finger… and their guns in his direction. But even when Marty is brought to the police station for his latest crime, he’s not worried. Marty is incredibly lucky.

After dodging the long arm of the law yet again, Marty looks for another illicit payday at a local amusement park. What he finds instead is a mysterious stranger who prophesies that his lucky days are running out. He ignores the warnings as he pursues a vicious conquest. But good fortune is a wheel, and Marty is about to find out what happens when it spins in the other direction.

Dark Ride is a supernatural thriller in the vein of The Twilight Zone. If you like eerie amusement parks, pulse-pounding page-turners, and a touch of the paranormal, then you’ll love P.G. Kassel’s electrifying story.

Review - A short novella that could easily have been fleshed out more. The police character were one dimensional and not very bright. They've been after Marty Wedlow for a while but he always outsmarted them.

What was interesting, to be introduced to Marty as some kind of anti-hero and slowly revealed to be a real scum bag. The police are definitely incapable of bringing him to justice but Marty finally meets justice in a horrific manner. My favorite line from the book is this, "He ignored God and God's ways his entire life, and now it was not God reaching for him but Satan." It sums up Marty in one sentence.

It's a quick fun read with not a lot of meat on it's bone but yet still a tasty literary snack.

Review - The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye by David Lagercrantz

Lisbeth Salander is back with a vengeance.

The series that began with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo continues as brilliant hacker Lisbeth Salander teams up with journalist Mikael Blomkvist to uncover the secrets of her childhood and to take revenge.

Lisbeth Salander—obstinate outsider, volatile seeker of justice for herself and others—seizes on a chance to unearth her mysterious past once and for all. And she will let nothing stop her—not the Islamists she enrages by rescuing a young woman from their brutality; not the prison gang leader who passes a death sentence on her; not the deadly reach of her long-lost twin sister, Camilla; and not the people who will do anything to keep buried knowledge of a sinister pseudoscientific experiment known only as The Registry. Once again, Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist are the fierce heart of a thrilling full-tilt novel that takes on some of the world's most insidious problems.

Review - This had all the familiar characters from the previous novel. So, the story is familiar and welcome. That's all. It's the least exciting of the 5 books and maybe the least pages for Lisbeth. If you have read previous novels,  you know that the character Lisbeth is not talkative to others but normally self reflective. Not so much this time. The supporting cast takes center stage for this story and when Lisbeth does fill in, it's just to punch someone in the neck or something.

It's familiar and that's what draws me to this series. I am hoping for more books where Lizbeth grows beyond her silence and violence. The book is good but not great.

The Complete Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle

Click Now on the Cover Photo.

Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, who first appeared in publication in 1887. He is the creation of Scottish born author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London-based detective, Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess, and is renowned for his skillful use of deductive reasoning (somewhat mistakenly - see inductive reasoning) and astute observation to solve difficult cases. He is arguably the most famous fictional detective ever created, and is one of the best known and most universally recognizable literary characters in any genre.

Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories that featured Holmes. All but four stories were narrated by Holmes' friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson, two having been narrated by Holmes himself, and two others written in the third person. The first two stories, short novels, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual for 1887 and Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character grew tremendously in popularity with the beginning of the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine in 1891; further series of short stories and two serialized novels appeared almost right up to Conan Doyle's death in 1930. The stories cover a period from around 1878 up to 1903, with a final case in 1914.

With the help of childhood friends, he learns to watch others around him and mimic their behaviors, in order to conceal the fact that his mind operates more like a computer that he has spent years programming. That program is what allows Noah to pass himself off as normal, by establishing parameters of right and wrong that are completely inviolable to him.

As a young adult, Noah finds structure in the U.S. Army, and becomes an excellent and exemplary soldier, but when his self-imposed programming is put to the test by the murderous acts of the superior officer, Noah finds himself quickly made expendable, charged with crimes he did not commit and facing the possibility of execution. Without any reasonable hope for a reprieve, Noah's logic-based mind accepts his fate.

Sometimes, though, things are not all as they seem to be, and Noah is offered one chance to save himself. It was his disability, his lack of emotion, that made him the soldier he had become. Now, an ultrasecret organization known as E & E wants Noah's talents, offering him a chance to survive…

The nondescript one in the background in the upper left corner of the screen, just sitting on the couch? The only one who did nothing? Not one single thing. That was my boyfriend, Drew. And that was the last time I saw him. Until today, when my father—now on a path to the White House—hired him as head of security for my new team as I return home after four years of “recovering” in an undisclosed location that involved white lab coats, needles, pills and damage control. You see, the other three guys never went to jail. Never had charges pressed. Never faced consequences. Until today. Game on.

Thirteen years ago, Melissa was abducted as a baby. Today, she was brutally murdered.
Thirteen years after her only child, Melissa, died in the maternity ward, Alice Cannon learns that her daughter's body has been found by a lake in San Diego with multiple stab wounds. She realizes that someone stole Melissa after birth and tricked her into believing her baby was dead.
The records of the hospital where Alice gave birth show that she and Melissa were discharged in excellent condition the day after delivery. Did Melissa's abductor pose as Alice? Were the doctors part of the conspiracy to steal her child?

Alice finds out that Melissa was adopted by a childless couple, Michelle and Norman Keener, and she suspects they were behind her daughter's abduction. When the Keeners show Alice a video of her handing Melissa over to them, she begins to question her memory--and sanity.   Did she forget giving her daughter away or is she a victim of a far-reaching conspiracy?

As Alice looks for clues, she discovers that she might be Melissa's killer.

Or maybe the real killer is trying to frame her.

The Inferno has Evolved…
