Review: A Game of Greed and Deception by John Mathews

Synopsis: When the charming Tammy Worthington takes her wealthy husband and step-daughter on a holiday weekend in the Colorado mountains, she has purely sinister intentions. Her husband is killed in a tragic auto accident, just as she had planned...and now her pending fortune awaits her. Or does it? With no body to be found in the wreckage, he just becomes a missing person, and Tammy is seemingly trapped inside the cabin with someone stalking her from outside. Could he possibly have known what she was up to and planned his revenge? What ensues is the macabre mystery drama of a sick and psychotic woman driven by her soulless greed who quickly turns from the hunter to the prey. The scenes include deadly traps and medieval torture devices, hidden doors and rooms, and an underground labyrinth of torture chambers that are not for the feint of heart. This is a scary thriller so devious that it is set up to fool the State police investigation. Can you guess what is really happening in this great murder mystery? This deadly game of murder and deception will keep you guessing until the final scene delivers a real shock that you won't soon forget.

Review: I liked a lot of this story. It could have been better. The promise of a great story was there but it reminded me of a Lifetime movie. Good enough for second tier cable station but not good enough for major movie backing. The book was in that league. There are plot points that happen and I am wondering what did I miss that supports what just happened in the story line. For example, a character escapes being tied up by pulling razor blades from their back pocket and cutting the ropes. I wondered to myself, where did those razor blades come from?

After I finished the story, I went back and looked, searching for razor and I found it. The character is rummaging through a medicine cabinet. Why? Snooping? They come across band-aids, safety pins and razor blades. The character sticks them in their back pocket. Problem solved, because you never know, right? It's this kind of plot hole back filling that kills this story and makes what could have been a great mystery into a mediocre story. There are twists and turns to the story but too much is revealed to keep me guessing.

I have to recommend this to fans of the genre only.

Review: Infected Planet by Dennis Yates @YatesScribe

Synopsis: A trio of outlaws are released from an orbiting prison and sent back to their home planet. The catch? Find the president's missing son, and you’ll be pardoned by the Federation.

Welcome to the desert planet of Lazarus, the hottest place in the universe inhabited by humans. It’s not only the heat that will kill you. Lazarus is also home to a spectrum of deadly creatures who have clawed out a living in the harsh desert, and they don’t take kindly to visitors. Not to mention the gangs of vicious bandits roving the land in search of anyone to kill and steal from.

As descendants of tough pioneers who first colonized Lazarus -- Jade, Ramos and Brand use their skills and knowledge to navigate a world now being ravaged by a zombie virus.

Review: This is a zombie story, need I say more? I went in knowing this and so was not disappointed. Neither should you if you choose to read this and please do if your a fan of the genre. Yates' writing style is fairly cliche due to the natural of zombies. There are some points in the narrative that really confused me. I think Yates is trying to be funny, witty, comedic? If so, he gives no indication by the narration or dialogue that the character is be wise ass. It just comes off weird. For instance, two characters quickly jump from trying to kill one another to politely introducing themselves.

Not a lot of instances of this but enough for me to mention to you dear reader. I can over look these hiccups and just embrace the zombie chase and I believe so could you. Check it out if the genre is to your taste...for brains.

Review - Tarkin: Star Wars Audio CD by James Luceno (Author), Euan Morton (Reader)

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. . . .

Bestselling Star Wars veteran James Luceno gives Grand Moff Tarkin the Star Wars: Darth Plagueis treatment, bringing the legendary character from A New Hope to full, fascinating life.

He’s the scion of an honorable and revered family. A dedicated soldier and distinguished legislator. Loyal proponent of the Republic and trusted ally of the Jedi Order. Groomed by the ruthless politician and Sith Lord who would be Emperor, Governor Wilhuff Tarkin rises through the Imperial ranks, enforcing his authority ever more mercilessly . . . and zealously pursuing his destiny as the architect of absolute dominion.

Rule through the fear of force rather than force itself, he advises his Emperor. Under Tarkin’s guidance, an ultimate weapon of unparalleled destruction moves ever closer to becoming a terrifying reality. When the so-called Death Star is completed, Tarkin is confident that the galaxy’s lingering pockets of Separatist rebellion will be brought to heel—by intimidation . . . or annihilation.

Until then, however, insurgency remains a genuine threat. Escalating guerrilla attacks by resistance forces and newfound evidence of a growing Separatist conspiracy are an immediate danger the Empire must meet with swift and brutal action. And to bring down a band of elusive freedom fighters, the Emperor turns to his most formidable agents: Darth Vader, the fearsome new Sith enforcer as remorseless as he is mysterious; and Tarkin—whose tactical cunning and cold-blooded efficiency will pave the way for the Empire’s supremacy . . . and its enemies’ extinction.

Review - I remember Tarkin as the only character not to fear Darth Vader. This book tells you why. This audio book is well read by Morton and extremely well written by Lucerno. The production of the audio book goes above and beyond in it's fully dramatized production of audio effects and voice manipulation. It is a movie for the mind. The story is intricate and fast paced and told in such a way that you can only love the bad guys and hate the rebel scum the plague the galaxy. CXan't these guys get it through their terror driven minds that the Emperor only wants to restore order through out the galaxy, duh.

And of course, every cd ends with an interlude from the Star Wars soundtrack. You know I love that.

You may have read the book but the audio book is an experience you will want to enjoy alone or with group. I can't recommend it more. Buy it. Hear it. Love it. I find your lack of ownership of this disturbing.

4.1 Stars

Herbert's Dune meets Banks' The Player of Games in The Phantom of the Earth, a spellbinding science fiction epic set deep underground after the fall of civilization on Earth's surface.

Here are the five thought-provoking postapocalyptic stories that lovers of science fiction can't stop talking about, gathered together in one volume for the first time. The futuristic theories, conspiracies, political maneuvering, and characters within these visionary tales will stay with you long after you finish.

In the Great Commonwealth of Beimeni, a subterranean civilization in North America, expansion long ago gave way to peace and prosperity in the face of the history's most devastating plague. Immortality is the reward for service and loyalty in Beimeni, a place where the physical blends with the metaphysical and power consolidates in the hands of those with a genetic edge. The fissures first spread slowly, then swiftly, until now the Great Commonwealth finds itself on the brink of economic devastation, challenged by forces from within that know its secrets and its crimes.

At the center of the conflict lie the Selendias of Piscator, founders of the resistance with an uncanny connection to the zeropoint field; and the BarĂŁo Strike Team, three researchers tasked with finding a cure to the Reassortment Strain, the plague that nearly wiped humanity from the Earth. Traveling from the uninhabitable but pristine surface to the habitable but inhospitable underground, this is a story about dedication to dreams, battle for survival, discovery and connection, song and celebration, undoing past misdeeds, and sacrifice for the greater good.

New Kindle, Oasis, is waterproof and I don't care.

So, Amazon is touting that the Oasis is waterproof. That may be a selling point for some but not me. I like all the other features it has. It has a bigger screen by an inch than the other Kindles. It has more storage capability, 12 light adaptive LEDs, Wi-Fi or Wi-FI and Free cellular connectivity, and light as hell at only 6.8 ounces.

Draw backs I see, no audio plug despite being Audible friendly. You must connect to Bluetooth head  phones or speakers. My guess it to keep it waterproof. Like I said, not a selling point to me but that seems to be the way things are going these days with wireless audio. If you do a little digging you will learn how Bluetooth audio is having codec issues and sound quality but if that's the future, the will iron out all those troubles soon.

If I found this under my Christmas tree, I would not complain one bit, plug for head phones or not. Check it out for yourself.

Review - Cress by Marissa Meyer @marissa_meyer

In this third book in Marissa Meyer's bestselling Lunar Chronicles series, Cinder and Captain Thorne are fugitives on the run, now with Scarlet and Wolf in tow. Together, they're plotting to overthrow Queen Levana and prevent her army from invading Earth.

Their best hope lies with Cress, a girl trapped on a satellite since childhood who's only ever had her netscreens as company. All that screen time has made Cress an excellent hacker. Unfortunately, she's being forced to work for Queen Levana, and she's just received orders to track down Cinder and her handsome accomplice.

When a daring rescue of Cress goes awry, the group is splintered. Cress finally has her freedom, but it comes at a higher price than she'd ever expected. Meanwhile, Queen Levana will let nothing prevent her marriage to Emperor Kai, especially the cyborg mechanic. Cress, Scarlet, and Cinder may not have signed up to save the world, but they may be the only hope the world has.

Review:

Marissa Meyer did something right with this book series because I can’t stop reading it. She’s created a sci-fi fantasy world that I’ve been able to completely immerse myself in. I enjoy the way she has taken classic fairy tales and given it a completely unique twist. Their stories are recognizable but she has given them enough changes that it is now her own story and characters but kept the essence of the stories without making the books stale.

The third book in the series introduces this world's version of Rapunzel. Cress, is an alien hacker locked up in a satellite orbiting the earth instead of a tower. I adore the way Meyer incorporated the classic elements of the original Rapunzel story. In Meyer’s version, Cress, is a hacker and her hacking abilities are too unrealistic for me to sustain my suspension of disbelief. While it is a modernized fairy tale, it bothered me how she seemed to know magically absolutely everything relevant to the plot without any real explanation as to how.

Meyer did an incredible job of making a story that held my interest despite the story’s problems. It has the right amount of adventure and violence and romance to make it enjoyable. I appreciate the work she put into making her story universe for Cress to take place in. Her characters for the most part are all interesting and with their own distinct voice. She created an irresistible plot and knows how to word things to keep you guessing and wanting more.

A QUEST OF HEROES (BOOK #1 IN THE SORCERER’S RING) revolves around the epic coming of age story of one special boy, a 14 year old from a small village on the outskirts of the Kingdom of the Ring. The youngest of four, the least favorite of his father, hated by his brothers, Thorgrin senses he is different from the others. He dreams of becoming a great warrior, of joining the King’s men and protecting the Ring from the hordes of creatures on the other side of the Canyon. When he comes of age and is forbidden by his father to try out for the King’s Legion, he refuses to take no for an answer: he journeys out on his own, determined to force his way into King’s Court and be taken seriously.

But King’s Court is rife with its own family dramas, power struggles, ambitions, jealousy, violence and betrayal. King MacGil must choose an heir from amongst his children, and the ancient Dynasty Sword, the source of all their power, still sits untouched, waiting for the chosen one to arrive. Thorgrin arrives as an outsider and battles to be accepted, and to join the King’s Legion.

Thorgrin comes to learn he has mysterious powers he does not understand, that he has a special gift, and a special destiny. Against all odds he falls in love with the king’s daughter, and as their forbidden relationship blossoms, he discovers he has powerful rivals. As he struggles to make sense of his powers, the king’s sorcerer takes him under his wing and tells him of a mother he never knew, in a land far away, beyond the Canyon, beyond even the land of the Dragons.

Before Thorgrin can venture out and become the warrior he yearns to be, he must complete his training. But this may be cut short, as he finds himself propelled into the center of royal plots and counterplots, ones that may threaten his love and bring him down—and the entire kingdom with him.

With its sophisticated world-building and characterization, A QUEST OF HEROES is an epic tale of friends and lovers, of rivals and suitors, of knights and dragons, of intrigues and political machinations, of coming of age, of broken hearts, of deception, ambition and betrayal. It is a tale of honor and courage, of fate and destiny, of sorcery. It is a fantasy that brings us into a world we will never forget, and which will appeal to all ages and genders. It is 82,000 words.

Review: Dragonfly in Amber: A Novel (Outlander) by Diana Gabaldon

The second part of the series from Diana Gabaldon that explores the power of a love which transcends space and time. A magnificent epic that once again sweeps us back in time to the drama and passion of 18th-century Scotland...For twenty years Claire Randall has kept her secrets. But now she is returning with her grown daughter to Scotland's majestic mist-shrouded hills. Here Claire plans to reveal a truth as stunning as the events that gave it birth: about the mystery of an ancient circle of standing stones ...about a love that transcends the boundaries of time ...and about James Fraser, a Scottish warrior whose gallantry once drew a young Claire from the security of her century to the dangers of his ....Now a legacy of blood and desire will test her beautiful copper-haired daughter, Brianna, as Claire's spellbinding journey of self-discovery continues in the intrigue-ridden Paris court of Charles Stuart ...in a race to thwart a doomed Highlands uprising ...and in a desperate fight to save both the child and the man she loves.

I was excited to hear the second part of the Outlander series. Genuinely excited because I love the first one so much. I was expecting more of the same awesome writing style and timing and characters.

I didn't get that. I was horribly disappointed. None of the time was to weave words in a beautiful and magically way that brought colorful visions within the mind's eye. Hints of it was there but then they would be later reused by another character. The vision broken and it's pieces shared by other character's inner dialogue. It seemed lazy and rushed.

There were other attempts to construct a details web of politics and backstabbing, very well done by Game of Thrones. But it wasn't there and never could due to the mcguffin being a historical fact. It's like watching the mechanics for the Titanic. You want want them to overcome impossible odds but we all know, it ain't going to happen.

We are introduced very quickly to Claire's daughter as well as other interesting characters but new given ample time to care for them. It too felt rush and quickly resolved.

It was so bad I nearly gave up with only 4 discs left but I soldiered on. I love the main characters and great supporting characters. If you can, read a spoiler filled synopsis. It will save you 30 hours.

Interview with Rita Avaud A.Najm

Digital Ink Spot: Please introduce yourself to our readers.

My name is Rita Avaud A.Najm. I am an American-Lebanese mother of two amazing boys. I was born and raised In Ashrafiyeh, Lebanon, one of the eastern parts of Beirut. Because of France’s mandate over Lebanon following World War I, French became the second language in Lebanon. I never thought that I would teach the language that I’ve studied and used for more than 20 years until I came to Utah. I felt so glad to know that many public and private schools in Salt Lake County offer a dual immersion French program. This fact encouraged me to teach French and to start writing my “La Petite Rita,” a series of stories about a French little girl, who came from Paris to live with her family in the United States of America.

Digital Ink Spot: At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?

Before Utah, I lived for more than five years in Houston, Texas. I even went back to college there and studied Business Management. Since I was working at one of Houston’s school libraries, I decided that my graduation project should be a guide for parents and teachers to encourage students to read more poetry and non-fiction books. My Guide and “La Petite Rita” were not my first books. I actually
started writing when I was 7 years old. My humble works were mostly plays, song lyrics, and Arabic poetry. My mom bought me at this age many of the children’s series of “Martine.” This very famous French book series, written by the Belgians Marcel Marlier and Gilbert Delahaye, has sold about 100 million copies and is one of the best-selling book series. I’ve always loved these stories and their beautiful colorful illustrations. I hope that “La Petite Rita” will become as famous as “Martine” and also “La Madeline.”

Digital Ink Spot: We learned that you have been writing since a child. If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?

I wish that I can go back in time and save all my writings, my essays and scratch note books that had all of my ideas and thoughts. I wish I wrote more and kept all my beautiful innocent joyful moments and my silliest odd scribbles. Now I try my best to remember and to make from my memories and my adventurous stories, a cute way to teach children about good morals and right conduct, while entertaining them and teaching them some common French words.

Digital Ink Spot: We also learned that you illustrate your own stories. Which comes first, the illustrations or the stories?

Stories always come first followed by illustrations that are usually to show the story and details of the characters mostly.

Digital Ink Spot: How is the creative process of painting and writing similar and different?

Writing and painting are both art. That’s my personal opinion. They both hold a message. They both show your own thoughts and the details of your creative mind and imagination. Tools might be different; one needs a brush, while the other needs a pencil. Writing and painting need you to be gifted and talented first... To master both, you need willingness to learn and practice. In painting, happiness or sadness can be seen in colors. In writing, these feelings are read. Yet paintings can make
viewers visualize something different then what the artist was trying to express or show in his painting. Any view, anything, an animal, a landscape, a beautiful face or a unique object can inspire an artist to draw a painting. But not everything you see deserves to have a book written about it. Another particular thing about writing is that you can fix any mistake; you can reread it and edit it as much as you can, as well as adding ideas or more actions and characters to your work anytime. When it comes to painting, once your work is done, it will be difficult to remove or change anything.

Digital Ink Spot: Where do your children stories come from?

My “La Petite Rita” stories are mostly about my childhood. Some are about my children, like “Rita’s Art Project,” one of the first volume stories. “Rita” in this story is actually my son who likes to draw, and the mother volunteer who gives art classes is actually me, who usually volunteers at my children school and teaches art and reads stories about the masters of art. Besides the two volumes of “La Petite Rita,” I have many Stories ready and waiting to be published. Some are fiction ones, full of imagination and creativity yet they all have a message and a lesson for a better conduct. Imagination is the key!
