Echoes by Jason Brant @jason_brant

Echoes

What if the thoughts in your head were not your own?

When Lieutenant Asher Benson suffered a traumatic brain injury while stationed in Iraq, his doctors warned him that the symptoms would be life altering. They had no idea. As Ash recovered, a never ending barrage of voices began echoing in his mind, effectively crippling his life. Mistakenly treated for PTSD, Ash was honorably discharged and now lives in self-imposed, drunken isolation.

Five years later, Ash is still struggling to rejoin society. His desperate, lonely existence is maintained by a meager disability check and gallons of alcohol. As he's finally learning to control his burden, and making progress with the girl next door, Ash is thrust back into a life he thought he'd left behind. When unidentified intelligence agents abduct him from his apartment, he is plunged into a world of espionage and assassinations.

A unique terrorist is operating on U.S. soil, and the government needs Ash, and the malady that has plagued him for half a decade, to find him.

At roughly 30,000 words, Echoes is an edge-of-your-seat, page-turning thriller with the pacing of The Terminator and the quirky characters of Carl Hiaasen.

Buzz Words by Doug Lucas @GMTAPublishing

Most of us think we understand how police investigations work. We've seen them depicted on television so often we believe it's really only one or two hardnosed, lone wolf detectives who will shoot, punch or intimidate criminals as they investigate crimes and apply justice in their own way. The image fiction has imprinted on minds is one of fast paced, rough and tumble fearless officers who are always at odds with their bosses, politicians and the law. They also manage to solve every crime in the amount of time allotted for the shows time slot, normally in forty-five minutes or less after you remove the commercials.

Real life police work is not for the faint of heart, and it is work; mind numbing work that at times makes you feel more like a researcher with a weapon than a law enforcement specialist.

Those lone wolf fictional police officers would mostly be unsuccessful in real life for one single reason, lack of teamwork.

Law enforcement requires a dedicated team of people who possess many different specialized skill sets, all working towards a single goal, and the processing of evidence to aide an officer in making a solid arrest.

There are specialized segments of police work that are accomplished by shadow people. These are the ones who're given the artifacts of a crime and asked to find information to confirm facts or assist the efforts of investigators as they search for answers to who, what where when and most importantly why.

Shadow people must be just as dedicated, just as driven, and just as determined as the officers they work for. Their knowledge of the specialized area they work in must produce accurate evidence for the investigator to work with and also stand the test of our judicial system to be of any value.

C.W. Burwell was a shadow person. One who met all of the requirements officers seek when they need a staffer from the shadows to process forensic evidence. He's just as driven and dedicated as the men and women he worked for.

CW is also snoopy, very married and retired. Retirement allows him to pursue two goals that he has set for himself, much to the shock of his wife and their bank account.

In an effort to give something back not only for law enforcement, but to fill a personal goal of his own, he buys the equipment of his trade and sets up shop. He offers his skills to small departments in an effort to help them process some of their evidence quicker. He also wants to train one or two officers in his field to aide and assist those small departments.

This is the very thing that will force him to reopen an investigation that has haunted him and one of his friends. Cliff is a sworn law officer from a medium sized department and the holder of a cold case. No one in law enforcement, not the shadow people or sworn officers, wants to be responsible for leaving an icebox behind after they move on.

CW and Cliff have worked this cold case so many times; they know the box contents by heart. A chance encounter with two other cold cases and theirs launches a frantic search for a serial killer------a very successful sadistic killer--------one who's on a mission; a mission that brutally ends the lives of young girls---------only young girls who are relatives of policemen.

You are introduced to the shadow world of forensics and watch an investigation from the inside as it starts, builds and reaches a climax. You are allowed to sit with a shadow person for just a short time and work with him. You will feel the pressure, confusion and fatigue of an active, desperate race against time as the investigation starts, builds with each piece of information found and ends in the arrest phase.

The only person in any investigation who has all the facts is the lead investigator. You'll meet Marty D, the driving force in an investigation that is twenty-one years old, as she sorts through the fog of time to prevent another Star.

All Jacked Up by L.A. Tripp @LATripp2818

All Jacked Up (All Jacked Up Series)

Is that too much to ask? For Jack, it is. Can he overcome psychotic co-workers, a boss that covers the truth, and falling on the wrong side of the fence? Not to mention interfering parents, trying to climb the rat-race ladder, and a girl that knows a little too much about him. It all adds up to sleepless nights and a can of beans for his one meal per day. How will Jack get out of this? Reader beware: This has a cliff-hanger ending.

The M-16 Agenda by James P. Wilcox @m16agenda

The M-16 Agenda

A man is not apt to forget the instant he becomes a killer; that one fateful instant when he takes another's life. It would not matter that Jack Granger has killed, all soldiers train to kill, except that he is the Democratic nominee in the presidential election of 2020. Having secured the nomination as Governor of Missouri and on the strength of his M-16 Agenda, his political platform developed in the killing sands of Iraq, Jack is days away from the White House when the situation in Iraq and in Washington D.C. changes everything. Now it is a race against time, and his own past, as he makes a last ditch effort to save his bid for the presidency, and possibly the world.

From the war torn battlegrounds of Iraq to the halls of power in Washington D.C., M-16 Agenda follows one man's rise to the heights of political power, as he struggles to live up to the promises he made to his fellow soldiers, his family, and himself.

Bach to God by Emily Nolan

Bach to God

This eBook is about Robert Baker's life, our story together, and my family's search for answers about CJD.In 2001, my father passed away of a mysterious disease called Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease (CJD). He was a cancer researcher and an environmental scientist who was trying to help the world and save countless lives. After he died there was no investigation into his death, by either the police or the media, not even a coronial or OH&S inquiry. I often felt very alone and alienated by the world. This was when I decided to start writing my father’s biography, and I found that delving into his life and holding onto his memory was a comfort to me. This book is about my father's life and achievements, how we dealt with his untimely death, and how a father and daughter's relationship changed in it's final days. This book is also for other people & families who have been affected by CJD. My book aims to help inform about the basics of CJD, but more importantly about dealing with the effects from a personal viewpoint.

H.E.R.O. - Metamorphosis by Kevin Rau @kevin_rau

H.E.R.O. - Metamorphosis

Although raised by single metahuman parents, Stephanie, Rael, and Lance weren’t prepared for the sudden and shocking event that thrust them into a night of upheaval as they cope with their metamorphosis into superhumans. The meteor shower that altered the heroes also mutated many others in Metrocity, causing a scene of chaos at Iron Cross General Hospital as Lance and Stephanie are captured by law enforcement, and Rael must free them.

The friends join the Homeland Extraordinary Response Organization (H.E.R.O.), and seek to stop a mutant named Shrinker as she gathers new supers to build an army of bloodthirsty mutants in her plan to cause anarchy. Her evil squad kidnaps normal humans to feed those mutants, and it becomes a race against time to find the anarchists before they murder the people.

While searching for the villain's base of operations, the group must learn their powers and overcome the problems associated with telepathy, a strong blood thirst, and strength capable of crushing steel under one’s fingers. They also begin to take part as heroes in the city, and discover that having powers is not as easy as it appears - in heroic actions or in normal life.

Murder For Comfort by John L. Work @WORK949

Murder For Comfort (The Detective J.D. Welch Novels)

J.D. WELCH returns for an encore in the second of the series of three novels - a murder suspense thriller.

Our detective has been paged out to look into the disappearance of SHEILA McCOWELL, a divorced mother of two daughters who is inexplicably absent from her job. When two picnickers discover her horribly beaten dead body, her disappearance becomes a front-page homicide investigation.

Sheila's ex-husband, JIM McCOWELL, the successful owner of a major contruction company, is the initial suspect. He divorced Sheila after eighteen years of marriage to pursue an affair with MARNIE SULLIVAN, a beautiful personal fitness trainer who is twenty-three years younger than he is.

Welch has just one lead from an astonishingly clean crime scene - a cryptic email from someone whose existence has been a closely guarded secret.

The pressure is on Welch to find the killer.

When the body of JIMMIE SLAIKOVITCH, a drifter with a crack cocaine habit and a prison record, turns up in a remote area of Park County - and Jim McCowell is shot to death during a business trip to Chicago - Park County Detective STEVE REILLY, Chicago Homicide Detective FRANK STANLEY and Detective J.D. Welch have to team up to discover who's responsible for the murders,

Written with the technical authenticity of an experienced law-enforcement officer's background, there's violence, romance, intrigue, conspiracy, and a plot filled with twists and turns that will keep you guessing right up to the end.

The Man in the Mountain by Doug Lucas @GMTALITERARY

The Man in the Mountain

For most of us, we have mental pictures of just what and how our favorite authors live. Their lives must be far richer and more interesting than ours, because they have the ability to engage our minds and thrill our souls with their visions of what life was, is or could be.

These word smiths can hold our imaginations in a vise grip with the grace and skill they weave action, love, adventure, and science fiction genres into a whole cloth we can clad ourselves in for an hour or a life time.

This magic cloth allows us to escape our own truth and absorb realities that thrill, intrigue or titillate us. At times authors can: relieve boredom, fear or want, and offer the grace of comfort to our mundane day to day existence. Most at one time or another has sought the company of our favorite author's work to do some or all of those things.

Poets entice us to spend an hour On Walden's Pond, historians teach us the lessons of The Rise and Fall of The Roman Empire, theologians interpret The Last Days of Christ for us, and humorist show us The Redneck Dictionary is really us as others see us.

We think we know these word smiths, those tellers of tales who will join, entertain and instruct us with the turn of a page or the touch of a screen. To one degree or another, we are what we read and what we read depends on the author who engages our mind.

But what would happen if a group of people found themselves in a real life web of entanglement and relied to one degree or another on their favorite author?

Would those solutions rendered in print, meet their needs or fail without aiding them as they sought solutions to their own drama?

Another small question might concern some of our favorite authors, would they meet our mental image of who they really are?

I invite you to spend some time with me and explore these questions, as you touch the screen or turn the page.

Meany by Peazy Monellon

Meany

Six year old Jenny Barnes wakes up from night terrors only to find out that ghosts are real and there’s no such thing as safe.

She lives in a two hundred year old farmhouse with her large family, but they’re not alone. There’s a malevolent presence up in the attic and the forest surrounding the farm is alive with folks who just won't stay dead. Worse is the fact that the cattle have developed a taste for murder and are threatening to stampede. Well…that, and the fact that it seems her own father is trying to kill her.

All Jenny wants is a childhood--a few moments playing in the sunny yard with her sisters. To get one, all she'll have to do is survive.

And as Eddie, the one farmhand who’s on her side notes, “this old place is going over.”

Will anyone get out of there alive?

Agent James McDougal in the Chilean Jungle by Michael Rohde

Interview with Emma Calin @EmmaCalin

The Digital Ink Spot interviewed Emma Calin, an author and poet who resides between The U.K. and France with her sexy French lover, Gilles.

The Digital Ink Spot: Tell the readers a little something about Knockout!
Emma Calin: Knockout! is an unusual book in that it sits across several genres - on one hand it is a full-on passionate romance but equally, it is a suspense thriller dealing with police investigations into match fixing and corruption in professional sport. Anna Leyton has worked her way up to Detective Inspector and has been posted to Interpol. While investigating international Internet gambling and the attempts of mobsters to fix the results of sporting events, Anna unwittingly becomes passionately and romantically involved with Freddie LaSalle, one of the world's top class boxers who will be fighting for the cruiser weight championship. He is a suspect in the investigation. She knows she should walk away from their relationship. She knows it can mean nothing but trouble. but she can't leave him. Her heart refuses to go. For too long, she has needed love in her love, and, with Freddie, she has found it. However, neither Freddie nor Anna has told each other the whole truth and their lies and deception form shaky foundations which are doomed to collapse - can their love survive the cataclysmic events unfolding around them? It transpires that Freddie has been offered ten million dollars by the mob to lose the championship fight. It's a big payday, a once-in-a-lifetime payday. And Anna is caught in the tangled web of her own conscience. Freddie, she believes, is the key to helping her unravel the mob's illegal and sometimes deadly ties with boxing. But her love won't let Anna ruin his life. She is in a quandary, and the mafia begins to fear that Freddie may keep his side of the deal. They need leverage. They kidnap Anna, demand that Freddie throw the match to save her life, and she becomes the focal point of a frantic battle triggered by Interpol and the FBI to take down the mob.

The Digital Ink Spot: What inspired you to write your book?
Emma Calin: I was inspired to write Knockout! because although I love reading about passion and romance, I sometimes find the background stories, motivations and settings of traditional romances unbelievable and fantastical. I wanted to set the love interest in my novel in a real-life situation with believable characters whose actions are lead by their strengths and flaws and to introduce dilemmas to really challenge their relationship.

The Digital Ink Spot: Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?
Emma Calin: One of the things I learned from writing this book was how difficult (but stimulating!) it would be to write the intimate love scenes in the best way I could. It is very hard to find a balance between the out and out gynecological and the much reviled 'purple' prose. I wanted the sex to be passionate and romantic and set within the context of a loving relationship and for it be neither embarrassing nor comical. And I definitely wanted it to be beautiful and tender. So far I have had only positive feedback from readers, so I'm hoping that I struck the right tone.

The Digital Ink Spot: Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
Emma Calin: I have always loved stories - as a child I was an avid reader and always had my nose in a book and would get hold of books any way I could. One of my earliest delights was going round second-hand book shops and picking up cheap books from the boxes outside on the pavement - the bargain books that were no longer fashionable. I would often buy one without knowing what it was about, it just felt so good to get something containing so many words for so little. I loved radio plays, cinema, the theatre, opera, poetry, TV soaps - any story about human relationships in any form. I have written numerous poems, short stories and articles which have been published over the years and I've won a few writing competitions. My work was often hard to categorize, I always tried to write the best stories I could - without trying to fit to a formula - which readers seemed to enjoy, but publishers often could not fit them in their standard 'genre' slots. The advent of the digital book and self-publishing has given me the opportunity to finally get my work out to the readers at large - and I have found that they love a good story and do not care if it contains crime, suspense, tension, love and romance in one package.

The Digital Ink Spot: What can readers expect from you in the future?
Emma Calin: I wrote Knockout! as a story for a big audience and I have learned a lot from it and very much want to stick with stories containing a large element of romance at their core. Love and relationships are what human life is about - particularly in a world that seems to totally focused on money, economics and the day to day drudge of work, Whatever you are in life, there will always be love and relationships in some form. Most readers of romantic fiction are looking for more passion than their day to day lives actually contain and it is a tremendous pleasure to me to bring sexual passion out of the closet and put it in the kitchen!

The Fall of Anne Boleyn: A Countdown

Interview with Jack Devon

The Digital Ink Spot interviewed Jack Devon, a former British intelligence agent and subsequently a Reuters correspondent and editor. He has lived and worked in 40 countries and covered a dozen wars, including the Soviet and U.S. occupations of Afghanistan. He divides his time between Shropshire in England and south-east Asia where he teaches English. The D.I.S. ask Jack Devon about his book, To Kill A Stranger.

Visit the author's website:  www.jackdevon.co.uk

The Digital Ink Spot: Tell the readers a little something about To Kill A Stranger
Jack Devon: To Kill A Stranger is about a former soldier down on his luck. He's lost everything dear to him, and lives rough on London's streets. Harry is haunted by his past as a paratrooper, by atrocities in the Falklands War, for example. An old comrade offers him a good deal of money to work for a
covert organization as an assassin. He's a tough guy, but also very vulnerable.

The Digital Ink Spot: What inspired you to write your book?
Jack Devon: I used to walk and cycle around London a lot and I met quite a few homeless people; some of them were indeed former soldiers. I also gave talks at prisons in the UK and discovered there were inmates who'd been in the military, people who'd come unstuck and made mistakes on returning to civvie street. This gave me the idea.

This isn't my first book, incidentally. My first was non-fiction, an account of the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, and written under another name nearly thirty years ago.

The Digital Ink Spot: Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?
Jack Devon: Writing is an itch that doesn't go away. It's cathartic, a release. It's not particularly sensible or financially speaking, a rational occupation. It's something one just has to do. A book is begun with immense optimism, but the result is inevitably unsatisfactory.

The Digital Ink Spot: Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
Jack Devon: I've always written. I wrote stories and plays at primary school and won short-story contests as a teenager. It's a basic instinct, one I don't fully understand.

The Digital Ink Spot: What can readers expect from you in the future?
Jack Devon: Another thriller, only better. It's written with the strong narrative pace of a thriller, but it's a satire. It's both hilarious and savage. Self-styled patriots won't like it. An agent and literary scout who's very
enthusiastic about it will start representation in a few weeks; she has a brief to find an indie publisher who loves it as much as we do.

Little Sacrifices by Jamie Scott @expatdiaries

Little Sacrifices
U.K. version

“Fifty–five years has made me a Savannahian by inclination if not origin. Everyone who meets me hears the taffy pull drawl of a native and feels the Southern hospitality for which we are known. They are surprised to find that I was once a Yankee, so well have I acclimated. The process began when we moved, but will never really be complete. And I’d be lying if I said my conversion came easy…It was only when I looked around and didn’t see myself reflected back that the questioning began.”

When Duncan and Sarah Powell move with their daughter, May, to Savannah Georgia in 1947, they hope against hope that they’ll be welcomed. But they’re Yankees and worse, they’re civil rights advocates almost a decade too early.

At first May can pretend they’re the same as everyone else. It means keeping quiet when she knows she should speak up, but it’s worth the sacrifice to win friends.

Unfortunately her parents are soon putting their beliefs into action. And when they wake to find that they’re the only family on the block with a Ku Klux Klan cross blazing on their front lawn, the time comes for them to finally decide between what’s easy and what’s right.
